Maligayang Pasko! 2024 is chock-full of programming and we're excited to kick off the year with our Winter Cohort Program for Tots, Kids, and Young Adults.  In the Kapwa Arts Winter Cohort, you'll get to learn from Kathara trained dancers and Filipino Martial Artists who support our society every year in performances and exhibitions during Filipino Heritage Month.  You or your child will get to learn the basics of <a href="https://youtu.be/3p4cAy9yyqw?si=ltoO9xug5EkjXyF3" target="_blank">Filipino Martial Arts</a>, will learn the dance and music basics of Mindinaoan Indigenous Identity in the Philippines, and take pride in reconnecting with heritage.  Kapwa Arts Winter features a total of 12 sessions from January to February at Collingwood Neighbourhood House, please note that some sessions are located at the "Main House" 5288 Joyce St, Vancouver, and some sessions are located at the "Annex," 3690 Vanness Ave, Vancouver. Through this funding, we will continue to connect youth and families with pathways to cultural joy and activity through Filipino Martial Arts, Music, Dance, and Healing Circles for Femmes and Non-binary Kapwa.  About the Kathara Pilipino Indigenous Arts Collective Society & Benefits of MembershipIn 2002, Kathara Dance Theatre Collective from Davao Mindanao Philippines, came to Canada to perform at a series of events which led to a series of cultural workshops attracting artists who wished to learn more about Kathara and Mindanaoan Indigenous Peoples identity.  Vancouverites from diverse ethnic and artistic backgrounds joined the workshops to explore the cultural arts of the Lumads (indigenous people) of Mindanao. This was how the spirit of intercultural exchange journeyed to Kathara Canada. Through mentorship from Kathara founder Elenita Boots Dumlao, Babette Santos helped establish the beginnings of Kathara in Canada. Throughout the years Kathara has participated and performed in countless community events in and around the lower Mainland reaching thousands of audience members. The number of artists who have trained, collaborated, and performed with Kathara has now reached close to a hundred participants.  Currently, the Society is comprised of artists, community workers, retirees, students, professionals, multi-generational, multi-ethnic, Indigenous & non-Indigenous, first and second-generation Filipinos & Canadians dedicated to greater social change, and the promotion of Pilipino Indigenous identity, arts, culture, & history. Each year the Kathara Society puts on programming that helps support reconnection to culture, ceremony, and learning.
