Our concert will be a commemoration of Remembrance Day, honouring our veterans and first responders. The church will be filled with memories, readings, and traditional music recalling “the Great War” and all conflicts that have allowed us to be free. In addition to the traditional “Last Post,” we’ll present music from Bach to Mozart to the powerful tribute “to victims of fascism and war” by Shostakovich. Family Time (December 9, 2023 at 7:30pm at the West Vancouver United Church)Our traditional Sinfonia Family Christmas will include all the expected Sing-Alongs, including the joyful Joy to the World and solemn Silent Night, as well as favourites for the kids (young and old and all in between!) We love to include celebrations of all religions and beliefs, so whether you commemorate Hanukkah (which will have just started the day before!) Orthodox Christmas, Kwaanza, the Winter Solstice, or just being away from work or school for a few days, we’ve got you covered! The special musical arrangements of Carol of the Bells, the Coventry Carol, In Dulci Jubilo, and our Huron Carol will make you glad to share Good Tidings of a Holy Night with Sinfonia and your family and friends. (Oh, yes, Rudolph, too, who says Feliz Navidad to all!) Acoustical Heaven (March 2, 2024 at 7:30pm at the West Vancouver United Church)The Vancouver Chamber Choir is a unique professional choral program that is as well-known for its traditional performances as for innovation. Composer-in-Residence Christopher Tyler Nickel is always busy writing for TV shows (he composes for 5 series!) and movies, but he also loves his concert music, especially works that include the voice. In his Requiem, he combines the clear tones of the VCC with the exquisite, soaring voice of soprano Catherine Redding. The resulting music for the Kyrie, Agnus Dei, Lacrimosa, and other settings will leave us breathless, mesmerized, and blessed. This concert will also celebrate the CD launch of this Requiem from internationally acclaimed label Avie Records, which was recorded with both tonight’s soloist, Ms. Redding, along with the Northwest Sinfonia Orchestra and Choir all under the direction of our own Clyde Mitchell. We’ll begin this deeply heart-felt program with Vivaldi’s Sinfonia Al Santo Sepolcro (The Holy Tomb) followed by Haydn’s early masterpiece, “The Philosopher,” his Symphony #22. Joyful. Brilliant. The choir will be busy with “JOY!” and the famous hymn from Finlandia by Sibelius, while the instrumentalists help us celebrate the 100th birthday of the great Henry (Pink Panther, Peter Gunn) Mancini! Our dear friend Libby Yu has promised us a Rachmaninoff 2nd Piano Concerto on WVUC’s Bosendorfer Grand!
