Keep an eye out for an email from <a href="mailto:gm@turningpointensemble.ca">gm@turningpointensemble.ca</a>.** Jocelyn Morlock – Commitment and Community<a href="https://turningpointensemble.ca/vancouver-magic/"> </a>(Friday, September 22 at 7:30pm & Saturday, September 23, 2023 at 7:30pm at the Annex Theatre)Jocelyn Morlock’s rich and diverse contributions were marked by compositions of quality, spirit, humour, eclecticism and thoughtfulness.  Her generosity to young composers and performers, attention to important issues including mental health, and championing of music deserving of greater recognition made a difference locally and nationally.  Turning Point Ensemble responds to her tragic passing with a major concert featuring three of her works for large ensemble: Icarus, Landing (2000), Zart (2006), and Luft Suite (2015).  The concert also includes the music of two composers of prime importance to Jocelyn – Nikolai Korndorf’s epic Let the Earth Bring Forth and a new version of John Korsrud’s Liquid, featuring solo clarinetist François Houle. Angel's Bone (Saturday, November 25 at 7:30pm & Sunday, November 26, 2023, at 2:30pm at the TELUS Theatre)Featuring the inventive and original music of Richard Rijnvos, and soloists Naomi Sato (traditional Japanese sho), and Timothy Chan (Chinese sheng), Harmony of the Spheres provocatively links music and thought of distant past and present day.  Rijnvos’ music includes the premiere of Aphrodite for solo sho and strings, a work which references the proportions of the solar system and the ‘drones’ emitted by the orbits of the planets (musica universalis) as theorized by the ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras.  The concert also pairs Rijnvos’ Riflesso sull’ incontro, a companion piece to Edgard Varèse’s iconic 100-year old composition Octandre, and includes Owen Underhill’s Gossamer Thread- Yousi Shu for solo sheng and ensemble, a composition based on a rare unorthodox form of Chinese calligraphy developed in the early twelfth century that resembles floating cobwebs. Chamber Concerto with guest conductor Fabián Panisello (Friday, January 12 at 7:30pm & Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 7:30pm at the Annex Theatre)We welcome Argentinian-Spanish composer and conductor Fabián Panisello to lead Turning Point Ensemble in a bold and dynamic concert featuring chamber concertos.  Panisello is a prominent figure in international contemporary music who is artistic director of Madrid’s Plural Ensemble, recognized as one of the most outstanding ensembles for new music in Europe.  The concert includes a rare performance of Piano Concerto by Gyorgi Ligeti, one of his most brilliant and virtuosic works, with UBC faculty member Corey Hamm as soloist.  In addition, the program includes Panisello’s own Concierto de Cámera, a chamber concerto by UK composer Phillip Cashian and the luminous Gold Leaf by Linda Catlin Smith. 20th Anniversary Concert (Saturday, May 18 at SFU Woodward's)Hold the date for a special Turning Point Ensemble event celebrating the 20th anniversary year of Turning Point Ensemble.  We will enjoy looking back and looking forward together through sharing some highlights of the past, premiering a new double concerto for trombonist Jeremy Berkman, double bassist David Brown and TPE by Farangis Nurulla-Khoja, and showcasing our highly respected educational program.
