It was spring of 2024 when Derrick Roul gifted a cowbell to Don Clarke.
In short order, it was a finish line favourite: ringing in 1k+ trail runners at the many annual events (ECT Ultra, Joy Run, Outpost8k, Seaside Showdown, TrailRacer) on the East Coast Trail and beyond (Rock Cut Ultra, Steep Ultra).
THE Cowbell became a touchstone of the local trail running community. A symbol of positive energy, new experiences, witness to countless realized dreams, adversity overcome, personal bests, flourishing friendships, and finding one’s place in in the world.
On October 26, shortly after 4 PM, The Cowbell last ring was almost rung. Having flown apart, it was lovingly mended by Don and persevered to ring one last time for the final finisher of the 2026 ECT 50 Ultra Marathon.
As The Cowbell enters retirement, now is your chance to give this local legend its new forever home and support The Trail we all love while doing so.
