Wielding a sound that would turn classical music scholars to stone, these four folk musicians are reimagining the Western string quartet. By inviting back voices previously regarded as too ugly for “polite society,” Medusa tempts us to redefine what is beautiful. This quartet is composed of: nyckelharpa and fiddle player Saskia Tomkins; multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire Marta Solek; cello, viola and fiddle player Lea Kirstein; and fiddle player Georgia Hathaway.  With their Canadian Folk Music Award (CFMA) Nominated debut album, Medusa’s dynamic arrangement style cross-pollinates the sounds of Middle Eastern, Scandinavian, Celtic, Appalachian, and Eastern European music, as well as original tunes, to create something previously unheard. With this debut release, the band connects audiences across dividing lines of culture and identity to reveal the common threads beneath. IMPORTANT NOTE You will also be asked to donate to the Zeffy platform, which charges no extra fees and ensures that 100% of donations goes to charities like ours,  but this is not compulsory. If you do not wish to do so, ensure that there isn't an automatic charge.

Maniant un son qui transformerait en pierre les spécialistes de la musique classique, ces quatre musiciens folk réinventent le quatuor à cordes occidental. En réinvitant des voix autrefois considérées comme trop laides pour une « société polie », Medusa nous tente de redéfinir ce qui est beau. Ce quatuor est composé de : la nyckelharpa et la violoniste Saskia Tomkins ; l'extraordinaire multi-instrumentiste Marta Solek ; la violoncelliste, altiste et violoniste Lea Kirstein; et la violoniste Georgia Hathaway.  Avec leur premier album nominé aux Prix de la musique folk canadienne (CFMA), le style d'arrangement dynamique de Medusa pollinise les sons de la musique du Moyen-Orient, de Scandinavie, celtique, des Appalaches et d'Europe de l'Est, ainsi que des airs originaux, pour créer quelque chose d'inédit. Avec ce premier album, le groupe connecte le public au-delà des lignes de fracture culturelles et identitaires pour révéler les fils communs qui se cachent derrière.
