The goals of the Pelmewash pier project are to provide recreation and social opportunities for all ages and abilities; strengthen family and community; promote health, active living, connect people and nature, enhance parkway experience. The concept is to enhance capabilities that already exist in the park: fishing and kayaking/canoeing, biking, and walking. The design concept of the pier is an L-shaped structure, fixed, with railings designed for fishing. There will be an additional floating dock structure with specialized universal accessible kayak/canoe launch system. There will be a large area at the south end with off-road parking for loading kayaks/canoes/bikes etc., with washrooms. There will also be a place for food vendors. The proposed Pelmewash fishing pier and kayak launch does not have a full cost developed yet, but currently has $25K approved to initiate design work. There is an initial high-level budget exercise from 2019 that identified approx. $100 thousand for a project budget. Half of the budget is expected to come from fundraising and grants. The Rotary Club of Lake Country and the Oceola Fish and Game club are fundraising for this initiative. Construction timelines depend on Provincial approvals and fundraising success as well as grant application success. The Pier could be in place by 2023. The next steps are to develop detailed design and costing, environmental permitting and Crown Land Tenure applications, artistic renderings, and visuals, fundraising and grant applications.
