This vase is inspired by a beautiful multi-coloured kuffiyeh from Sitti Soap I was gifted by my husband during a time in my life where I could either speak truth to power, or sit ideally by while my former boss normalized taking Israeli business at our company. I chose to speak up. What unfolded was a disappointing response by my leadership and colleagues, but reassurance in myself and resilience in a set of values most only pretend to care about.
I also drew inspiration from International Woman's Day and the lovely Mama's4Palestine. I designed this vase to be especially feminine in its shape - to draw upon the power of a woman carrying new life.

High resolution photographic print on archival matte hot press paper, mounted on archival foam core. This is part of a series of portraits of women through their cook books with all the marks and stains, acting as witness to their emotional and domestic labour. To prepare food for others, from the planning and purchasing to the cooking and serving, women and their labour have long been at the core of fond memories and nostalgias triggered by foods made by someone who remembers favourite desserts and traditional meals. The evidence of that care is seen through the repeated use of the cook book.

The Nubian Pyramids also known as Meroë West are the largest in number and oldest pyramids that date back to one of Africa’s earliest civilizations: The Kingdom of Kush.
Sudan has the most ancient pyramids (estimated between 200-250). Historians believe these pyramids were built by rulers of the ancient Kushite Kingdoms known as Black Pharaohs. These pyramids are found along the Nile River and once served as the tombs of Kings and Queens.
The flowers depicted in this painting are hibiscus flowers which are native to Sudan.
Inspired by the fierce chant-leaders of Sudan, the woman in this painting wears her traditional thobe (dress) adorned in traditional gold.
