Walk the streets where Hogan&rsquo;s Alley once stood and learn what was lost&mdash;and what community is rebuilding today. Hogan&rsquo;s Alley was the unofficial name for a T-shaped intersection at the southwestern edge of Strathcona neighbourhood that formed the nucleus of Vancouver&rsquo;s first concentrated Black community in the early 1900s. Through this guided walking tour participants will learn about former residents who helped build the community, such as Nora Hendrix and Vie Moore. &nbsp; Walking through Hogan&rsquo;s Alley and the broader Strathcona neighbourhood, they will learn about key locations past and present. The tour will give a taste of what it was like to live in Hogan&rsquo;s Alley, what it meant to the Black residents, and what it represents for Black communities today. We will also share about the work of Hogan&rsquo;s Alley Society today and the plans, including the community land trust spanning across Metro Vancouver. Hogan&rsquo;s Alley was once the heart of the Black community and a hopeful multi-racial and multi-ethnic community in the heart of Vancouver and this project will ensure that it will be once again.&nbsp; This 2 Hour Heritage Walk includes a stop outside Nora Hendrix&#39;s Heritage Home - with family history &amp; personal anecdotes shared. Your Tour Facilitator: Lama MugaboLama Mugabo is a community planner, educator, and storyteller based in Metro Vancouver. He is the Founding Director of the Hogan&rsquo;s Alley Society, where he works to advance the recognition and revitalization of Vancouver&rsquo;s historic Black neighbourhood, Hogan&rsquo;s Alley, which was displaced by urban renewal policies in the 1970s.&nbsp;&nbsp; He is also the Chair of Building Bridges with Rwanda (BBR), where he leads international reflection tours and educational initiatives that connect global lessons in reconciliation, governance, and community resilience to local contexts in Canada.&nbsp;&nbsp; As an educator, Lama has served as a visiting lecturer at Simon Fraser University and currently co-teaches at the University of British Columbia&rsquo;s School of Social Work, focusing on community organizing, anti-Black racism, and urban history.&nbsp;&nbsp; Through public speaking, walking tours, and storytelling, Lama continues to amplify the history of Hogan&rsquo;s Alley while fostering dialogue about belonging, justice, and the future of inclusive communities. Registered participants will receive the exact starting location approximately 1 week before the tour. Booking Policy<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Tours will be closed for booking 48 hours before the start time.</li><li fr-original-style="" id="isPasted" style="box-sizing: inherit;">We require a minimum of 15 participants to run a tour.&nbsp;If this minimum is not reached, participants who have purchased a ticket will be notified 48 hours before the tour &amp; be invited to rebook.</li><li fr-original-style="" id="isPasted" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Confirmed tour attendees will receive the exact starting location 48 hours before the tour.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">To effectively engage participants &amp; ensure community safety,&nbsp;the maximum number of participants in a tour is 30. Groups larger than 30 participants are welcome to book multiple tours.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Participants are advised to bring water, a notebook if you&rsquo;d like to jot some facts down, a camera if you&rsquo;d like to capture along the tour. To help plan for the weather, think about whether you might need a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, an umbrella, gloves, boots, and layers.&nbsp;</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Pets are welcome!&nbsp;We advise participants to take the necessary steps to safeguard the comfort of furry friends &amp; fellow humans &ndash; through leashes, harnesses, portable food &amp; water, waste bags, carriers, and other assists where appropriate.</li></ul> Accessibility<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Washrooms are not provided as part of this tour. If needed, participants are encouraged to support a local business along the route and use customer washroom facilities where available.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Please be aware that this walking tour may include uneven pavement, slopes, grass, and small hills. Participants are advised to wear comfortable footwear and exercise caution as needed.
