Course Introduction:<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" id="isPasted" style="box-sizing: inherit;">This course is made up of 4 classes, each lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes, total of 6 hours.</li><li fr-original-style="" id="isPasted" style="box-sizing: inherit;">A foundational course designed to provide spiritual seekers with an integral view of Buddhism, covering its history, philosophical traditions and development over time, and most importantly, revealing the essence of the Buddha&#39;s teachings and practices.</li><li fr-original-style="" id="isPasted" style="box-sizing: inherit;">No prior knowledge or experience required.</li><li fr-original-style="" id="isPasted" style="box-sizing: inherit;">A certificate of completion of the course will be provided.</li></ul>Participants will learn:<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" id="isPasted" style="box-sizing: inherit;">What is Buddhism: How to understand and experience the Buddhadharma not just as a religion, but also as a profound philosophy, a science of the mind, and a practical lifestyle.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Historical Origins and Cultural Adaptation: The life of Buddha Śākyamuni, the historical expansion of the Dharma across Asia, and how Buddhism maintains its core essence while adapting to different cultures.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">The Core Foundations of Unity: The significance of taking refuge in the Triple Gem (Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha), the Buddha&rsquo;s pioneering vision of universal equality, and the three levels of teachings.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Deep Philosophy and Psychology: Key Buddhist frameworks including the Four Noble Truths, the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination, and the Three Dharma Seals (Impermanence, Non-self, and Nirvāṇa).</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">The Path of Practice and Ethics: How to cultivate mindfulness over body, speech, and mind through the Noble Eightfold Path (Ethics, Meditation, and Wisdom) and the voluntary commitment to the Five Precepts.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">A Method for Personal Transformation: A gradual learning process (Study, Analyze, Apply, and Verify) designed to overcome suffering, cultivate compassion, and integrate these timeless insights into everyday life.</li></ul> Instructor: Jessy Lok Mentor:&nbsp; Shifu Zhihan About JessyBorn in Canada and raised in Hong Kong, Jessy Lok returned to Vancouver in 2010 to continue her studies and build her life in the community. She began her Buddhist journey in 2016 and has since been practicing under the guidance of the venerables, with a focus on Buddhist meditation and integrating the Dharma into daily life.Over the years, through consistent practice and learning, Jessy has developed a deep appreciation for the transformative benefits of Buddhist teachings. With gratitude for the teachings and guidance she has received, she aspires to share these practices in a way that is simple, practical, and accessible to people from all backgrounds.Jessy holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2018 and a Master&rsquo;s degree in Counselling Psychology from Adler University in 2023. She is also a Registered Clinical Counsellor in British Columbia, integrating psychological understanding with contemplative practice to support wellbeing and inner growth. As an instructor at Bodhiyana Meditation Centre, Jessy hopes to contribute to the Canadian community by making Buddhist teachings and meditation more accessible and supporting individuals in cultivating greater awareness, calmness, and compassion in everyday life. About Ven. Shifu ZhihanBorn in Taipei and raised in Vancouver, Ven. Shifu Zhihan became a Buddhist monk in 1993, training in the Chinese Mahāyāna tradition before studying under the late Dharma Master Jenchun in New Jersey. In 2008, he began teaching Buddhist philosophy and meditation across South America and translating classical Chinese Buddhist texts. In 2009, he founded the Bodhiyāna Foundation to translate sacred texts into Spanish, Portuguese, and English, and in 2013 co-founded the Bodhiyana Buddhist Education Society in Surrey, Canada which promotes peace through Buddhist teachings.
