<div>December Learning Circle 2 with Creators Garden </div>Decolonizing Land-Based Pedagogy at Maplewood Flats December 14, 11:00 am- 1:00 pm (Pre-registration required)  For our December Circle, we will hear from Andrés Jiménez Monge and Junaid Shahzad Khan of Creators Garden. Maplewood Flats and Creators Garden have remarkable similarities with respect to their emphasis on education, native plant knowledge, and First Nations language. We will learn from their interdisciplinary approach to lifting up First Nation's sovereignty while also engaging settlers in land-based learning.<div>This collection of monthly learning circles supports community learning and design of Maplewood Flats' place-based &amp; land-based education pedagogy. Maplewood Flats is a platform for decolonizing work as we lift up Tsleil-Waututh knowledge and placebased redress. From leading the campaign to ban shark finning in Costa Rica, to building international funding opportunities for Costa Ricans looking to study in the environmental field in Canada, to managing conservation programs across Canada, Andrés’ journey into nature goes back over twenty years. Now a father of two, some of you may be familiar with his work through the Toronto Bird Celebration, his best-selling online course The beginners Guide to Birdwatching: Finding birds and happiness, and The Warblers podcast, for which he was a creator and co-host. Andrés has an infectious enthusiasm for nature, which he utilizes to help foster its stewardship. Junaid Shahzad KhanJunaid Shahzad Khan is a NON-Indigenous, Muslim-Canadian from the Indus Valley, from the region that is now Pakistan. Junaid has worked as an ecologist for over 12 years, on issues of invasive species, plastic pollution, habitat revitalization, insect conservation, and bird education. Over the past four years, Junaid has committed himself to the understanding of ecologies within Indigenous cultures. Through the ongoing learning of Anishinaabemowin, and working alongside community members looking to rejuvenate Anishinaabek cultural practices, he hopes to help support efforts towards Indigenous land sovereignty across Turtle Island. She is the granddaughter of Italian immigrants from the Liri River watershed, Scottish settlers of the Matheson Clan from the Isle of Lewis, and German-Austrian settlers. Her responsibilities lie to the People and Beings of the places her, and her ancestors have always lived on Anishinaabe Akiing. She is land-based educator passionate about teaching others how to build anti-colonial relationships to the Natural World that uphold Indigenous Sovereignty. She works for Inlailawatash as an Archaeologist and has worked for TWN as a consultation and accommodation assistant, and as a referrals analyst. She has a comprehensive understanding of First Nations’ governments, intergovernmental relations and the consultation process. She has served on the Board of the Museum of Vancouver and the First Peoples’ Cultural Council’s Indigenous Cultural Heritage Advisory Committee. Karen Thomas is a PhD student at UBC Archeology, holds an MA in anthropological archaeology from UBC, and holds a B.A. (Hons) in Archaeology with a minor in Anthropology and Cultural Resource Management from SFU.
