In this course, you will learn how to identify many macrolichens of Wapna'ki using guides, dichotomous lichen keys, and information about lichen families and broad classifications. Additionally, you will learn about the unique ecology of the lichen symbiosis, the abundance of rare and special lichens in Nova Scotia, and about the conservation of lichens in this region.  Course Outline:10:00am - 10:30am: Introductions, ice breaking10:30am - 11:45am: Introduction to lichens11:45am - 12:30pm: Lunch and chat12:30pm - 2:00pm: Short hike in the forest to see lichens in the wild2:00pm - 3:30pm: Indoor look at lichens, which will include a microscope, a variety of specimens collected from off-site, opportunity to "test" lichens for certain chemicals, and preparing on-site collections for Herbarium cataloguing3:30pm: Wrap-up and thank you's!
