His art career began in 1965 as Advertising & Display Manager for Sears Nanaimo, while also freelancing as a commercial artist. In 1971, he transferred to Kelowna, where he began pursuing fine art. His first solo show was at the Dow Reid Gallery in 1973, and he became a full-time artist in 1979 after retiring from Sears. Returning to Vancouver Island, Al set up a studio in Nanoose Bay. A prolific painter, he created over 1,000 works in watercolor, ink, charcoal, and acrylic, many of which are held in private collections worldwide.
