The Minds &amp; Machines Technical Workshops are intended to give high school students hands-on experience with in-demand technical skills: 3D printing, electrical circuits, and AI programming. Most students are never exposed to these technologies before reaching university, so we hope to introduce them earlier and spark some passion. 3D Printing: students will be introduced to modern manufacturing approaches including additive and subtractive manufacturing. Students will tour the Myhal Fabrication Facility - the facility used by engineering students at the university. Students will learn the fundamentals of computer-aided design which will enable them to bring design ideas to life. Each student will send a personally designed item to be printed which will serve as a souvenir of their learning. Electrical Circuits: students will undergo a crash course in safe electrical practices. Students will learn the schematic representations of electrical components, and be able to identify those physical components. Students will learn how to physically create a circuit from a schematic and employ best practices. Students will solve a circuit design challenge, putting their new skills to the test. AI Programming: students will learn the technical fundamentals and boundless applications of artificial intelligence; in particular, students will learn about neural networks, CNNs, and LLMs. Students will learn the lifecycle of an AI application, including finding a dataset, preprocessing, training the model, and evaluating its performance. Thereafter, students will replicate this methodology given a new task and dataset.
