Thinset: Beyond Adhesion
Mosaic Artist : ANGÈLE BLASUTTI
- In this workshop, students will learn to use Thinset mortar as a building material for creating their own one-of-a kind substrates AND tesserae. Thinset is a popular adhesive used by many contemporary mosaic artists, but thanks to its durability, thinset can also be used to create interesting 3D shapes.
- Students will get comfortable mixing thinset and applying it to mesh for the purpose of creating new substrates for future mosaics. Some objects will be provided to help sculpt and shape new substrates, but students are welcome to bring their own objects.
- As a bonus, and to limit the amount of waste, students will learn a few tricks on how to use leftover thinset to create new tesserae. We will tint and mold the thinset at the end of each session.
- Students will take home one 5”X5” substrate and one 3D substrate, and some thinset “tiles”. This course is beginner-friendly but intended for students who wish to take their mosaic skills to the next level.
Duration: Two 3-hour sessions to allow the first layers of thinset to dry overnight.
