Make sure to have your McGill ID number on hand if you are a McGill student. Please note all sales are non-refundable. Join the 2025-2026 edition of McGill Flying Club: Ground School! Learn about the planes themselves, the theory of flight, air law, licensing, meteorology, flight instruments and procedures, navigation, and more from our two instructors (Class 1 and Class 4) with decades of experience. Slideshows, practice exams, and more will be provided.  When will classes take place?Classes will take place on the downtown campus of McGill. Classes will be on Monday evenings from 6 to 9pm and the first class will be on October 27th. Class will be every week, except for finals season, winter break, spring midterms season, and spring break. The last class will be on March 30th, 2026. Which ticket should I buy?The cost of ground school is subsidized for McGill Engineering and McGill students. You will be asked to provide your student ID to purchase one of these tickets to ensure you qualify for the subsidies.There is also the option to checkout with a mock-exam add-on. Note that this may only be purchased in-addition to one of the three ground school packages. The next section explains the mock exam add-on.Finally, you may opt to add a flight tag to your purchase if you’d like:) Is this ground school official?Ground school is an important step towards getting your private pilot license. You can get the ground school certificate of completion by attending at least 40 of the 45 hours of classes. This certificate is valid for life and is needed to get your PPL. At the end of the course, you will have the opportunity to sit a mock written exam proctored by the instructors. In order to sit this exam, you must have a valid Transport Canada medical certificate (Class 1, 3 or 4) and provide proof of at least five hours of flight training. If you pass this exam, the instructor (Class 1) will provide you with a formal Transport Canada–compliant letter of recommendation enabling you to register for and sit the Private Pilot License – Aeroplane (PPAER) Written Examination. The choice of whether or not to register for this mock exam can be made now, but will be offered partway through ground school as well. The additional fee to take this mock exam covers the instructor’s extra time proctoring and grading the exam. Why is our ground school so affordable?Our ground school reflects the cost of paying experienced instructors to come to McGill weekly to teach a class of students, as well as room bookings on campus. This ground school is cheaper than most online ground school options, and hundreds of dollars cheaper than other similar, in person ground schools. Our goal is to provide an ‘in’ to the general aviation community that is affordable to students.
