Photography, Place, and Stories of Tong Yan Gaai (Chinatown) Join us for an evening with acclaimed photographer and artist Morris Lum for an intimate exploration of Tong Yan Gaai (Chinatown), his decade-long photographic series documenting Chinatowns across Canada and the United States.Working primarily with a large-format camera, Lum has spent more than a decade capturing the architecture, businesses, streetscapes, people, and cultural spaces that define and continue to reshape North American Chinatowns. His work explores Chinese Canadian identity, migration, memory, home and belonging, while documenting communities undergoing tremendous social and physical change. Lum will be joined in conversation by Edmonton artist and community organizer Shawn Tse, who is passionate about creating space for underrepresented stories. Together, Morris and Shawn will discuss Lum&rsquo;s photographic practice, his experiences photographing Edmonton&rsquo;s Chinatown, and the evolving communities and cultural spaces that make Chinatown what it is today. The conversation then moves to the streets themselves. Following the talk and Q&amp;A, join Morris and Shawn for a casual walk through Edmonton&rsquo;s South Chinatown, visiting some of the sites featured in Morris&rsquo; work. Shawn will provide local context and share stories about the neighbourhood, its transformation, and see the development of Chinatown&#39;s new Chinatown Gate.&nbsp; The evening concludes at 7 Kitchen, a local Chinatown restaurant, where attendees can continue the conversation over dinner. This session is an opportunity to experience Chinatown through images, stories, streets, food and conversation.
