So Surreal : Behind the Masks est un documentaire qui raconte l’histoire méconnue des masques cérémoniels des peuples Yup’ik (Alaska) et Kwakwaka’wakw (côte nord-ouest). Le cinéaste Neil Diamond, originaire de la nation crie (une des grandes nations autochtones d’Amérique du Nord) et reconnu pour ses documentaires engagés comme Reel Injun et Red Fever, apporte une perspective unique, enracinée dans sa culture et son engagement pour la préservation des récits autochtones. À la fois expédition et quête spirituelle, cette investigation nous plonge dans l’histoire de ces objets culturels détournés par les musées et collectionneurs occidentaux, depuis les lointaines terres de Turtle Island (Amérique du Nord) jusqu’aux mains des surréalistes européens. Ces masques ont influencé des artistes et écrivains modernes parmi les plus célèbres, tels que Max Ernst (peintre et sculpteur allemand), André Breton (poète français), Roberto Matta (peintre et sculpteur chilien) et Joan Miró (artiste catalan). À travers ce voyage, Neil Diamond révèle l’influence méconnue des cultures autochtones sur l’art moderne et suit la quête de restitution d’un masque volé il y a plus d’un siècle au peuple Kwakwaka’wakw. Neil a co-réalisé les longs métrages documentaires primés “Reel Injun” et le plus récent “Red Fever”, ainsi que “One More River”, “Cree Spoken Here” et “Heavy Metal : A Mining Disaster in Northern Quebec”. Il a co-réalisé également “Inuit Cree Reconciliation”, “The Last Explorer” et la série documentaire “Dab Iyiyuu”. Il est un photographe primé et cofondateur du magazine The Nation, le premier magazine d’information au service des Cris du nord du Québec et de l’Ontario. En 2024 il a co-réalisé le documentaire long métrage “So Surreal : Behind the Masks”. Joanne Robertson est une réalisatrice, chercheuse et productrice au contenu basée à Montréal. Elle a commencé son travail avec Rezolution Pictures il y a plus de 25 ans, en collaborant avec son co-réalisateur Neil Diamond (cri) sur des projets documentaires tels que Cree Spoken Here, Dab Iyiyuu et One More River. Depuis, elle a continué à travailler ses compétences en recherche, en réalisation et en production du contenu sur divers projets documentaires, dont Making Movie History de l’Office national du film (ONF), Ports d’attache et Chacun son île pour lequel elle a été nominée aux Gémeaux pour la meilleure recherche, et plus récemment comme productrice au contenu sur Lands Enchanted, Spirit of Birth et le long métrage documentaire Red Fever. Joanne a également été productrice sur l’installation Lasciare Suonore de l’artiste Kara Blake à la Place des Arts à Montréal et du court métrage d’animation de Todd Stewart, The Wind and the Trees. Elle est co-réalisatrice avec Neil Diamond de So Surreal : Behind the Masks, le long métrage documentaire sur l’influence profonde des masques autochtones sur les artistes surréalistes.
