So Surreal : Behind the Masks is a documentary that uncovers the untold story of the ceremonial masks of the Yup&rsquo;ik people (Alaska) and the Kwakwaka&rsquo;wakw people (Northwest Coast). Filmmaker Neil Diamond, a member of the Cree Nation (one of the major Indigenous nations of North America) and known for his impactful documentaries such as Reel Injun and Red Fever, brings a unique perspective deeply rooted in his culture and his commitment to preserving Indigenous narratives. Both an expedition and a spiritual quest, this investigation delves into the history of cultural objects appropriated by Western museums and collectors, from the distant lands of Turtle Island (North America) to the hands of European surrealists. These masks have influenced some of the most renowned modern artists and writers, such as Max Ernst (German painter and sculptor), Andr&eacute; Breton (French poet), Roberto Matta (Chilean painter and sculptor), and Joan Mir&oacute; (Catalan artist). Through this journey, Neil Diamond reveals the lesser-known influence of Indigenous cultures on modern art and follows the quest for the restitution of a mask stolen over a century ago from the Kwakwaka&rsquo;wakw people. Presented in partnership with FIFA, this activity is part of the symposium &ldquo;Black Atlantic Networks: Heritage, Knowledge, and Solidarity,&rdquo; organized by Nigra Iuventa in partnership with the Consulat g&eacute;n&eacute;ral de France &agrave; Qu&eacute;bec and the Goethe-Institut. Since then she has honed her research, directing and story producing skills on diverse doc projects including the NFB&rsquo;s Making Movie History, Ports d&rsquo;attache, Chacun son &icirc;le and as story producer on APTN&rsquo;s Lands Enchanted and the award-winning documentary Red Fever. Neil a co-réalisé les longs métrages documentaires primés “Reel Injun” et le plus récent “Red Fever”, ainsi que “One More River”, “Cree Spoken Here” et “Heavy Metal : A Mining Disaster in Northern Quebec”. Il a co-réalisé également “Inuit Cree Reconciliation”, “The Last Explorer” et la série documentaire “Dab Iyiyuu”. Il est un photographe primé et cofondateur du magazine The Nation, le premier magazine d’information au service des Cris du nord du Québec et de l’Ontario. En 2024 il a co-réalisé le documentaire long métrage “So Surreal : Behind the Masks”. Joanne Robertson est une réalisatrice, chercheuse et productrice au contenu basée à Montréal. Elle a commencé son travail avec Rezolution Pictures il y a plus de 25 ans, en collaborant avec son co-réalisateur Neil Diamond (cri) sur des projets documentaires tels que Cree Spoken Here, Dab Iyiyuu et One More River. Depuis, elle a continué à travailler ses compétences en recherche, en réalisation et en production du contenu sur divers projets documentaires, dont Making Movie History de l’Office national du film (ONF), Ports d’attache et Chacun son île pour lequel elle a été nominée aux Gémeaux pour la meilleure recherche, et plus récemment comme productrice au contenu sur Lands Enchanted, Spirit of Birth et le long métrage documentaire Red Fever. Joanne a également été productrice sur l’installation Lasciare Suonore de l’artiste Kara Blake à la Place des Arts à Montréal et du court métrage d’animation de Todd Stewart, The Wind and the Trees. Elle est co-réalisatrice avec Neil Diamond de So Surreal : Behind the Masks, le long métrage documentaire sur l’influence profonde des masques autochtones sur les artistes surréalistes.
