Can we look to piecework, a universal craft language, as a cognitive framework for understanding the complex ways that identities are created and shared? What are the scraps of connection that make us who we are? This workshop investigates piecework and appliqu&eacute; as means of expression and conceptual platform for 2SLGBTQIA+ expression. Starting with a scrap exchange of meaningful cloth, we will work with collective material as a nod to the tradition of a quilting bee. We will focus on &lsquo;crazy quilt&rsquo; patchwork and &lsquo;fancywork&rsquo; embroidery, where participants can embellish a small patchwork quilt block (12&quot; x 12&quot;) with markers of their identity and contemporary times, such as names, dates&nbsp;sites, and souvenirs. Tools &amp; Supplies to bring:<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">bits of fabric that feel important to you*</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">thread and scissors (optional, will also be provided)&nbsp;</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">thimble (if you have one...also not necessary)</li></ul>*Fabric for Scrap Exchange:&nbsp;Piecework traditions and quilt-making have long been a medium for the reconstruction of scrap pieces of cloth into something wholly new. Scraps have historically been and continue to be traded among quilters to add variety of colour and pattern to their stashes, and sometimes personal connections to their works. There are many scrap exchanges recorded in North American quilt histories, and these events ranged from private family affairs, to church functions, to large public events advertised in newspapers.&nbsp; For our workshop, we will begin by using a scrap exchange as a way to introduce ourselves. I hope you might share a fabric that carries some kind of personal meaning for you (color, pattern, texture, history of use, family ties, etc), and use this fabric to tell the group something about yourself. This could be a garment, a domestic textile, or a special fabric. With this fabric that you will contribute, cut it into 14 same-size pieces (between 4&rdquo;x4&rdquo; - 12&rdquo;x12&rdquo; in size) to share with the other participants. Then everyone will have 14 different fabrics to choose from for our piecework samples and projects. This way, we will take home a small scrap of each other.&nbsp;
