About this event

Non-Newtonian Fluid Lab Ticket (Grades 1 - 8)
US$7
In this Science Olympiad event, students can explore the wonders of non-Newtonian fluids in this lab! While schools teach about the properties of solids, liquids, and gases, students may wonder about things such as slime and their placement in these categories of classification. Students will be able to explore the world of slime and Oobleck, a mixture of cornstarch that appears to be both a solid and a liquid. In learning more about these gooey substances, they will learn valuable lessons that not only jump into their interests, but also educates them in how they can practically apply their knowledge to further study and research. Students will be able to take home their slime and a lot of knowledge about how science can really jump out at them in unexpected ways. Note - Ticket type only denotes which Science Olympiad Event the student will be attending for the last segment of the event - all other events are open to all students of all grade levels. Participation in the event requires a ticket of $5; however, only one particular Science Olympiad workshop may be chosen during the last portion of the event. All elementary school students must have a parent or guardian present at this event in order to participate. It is optional for middle school students to have a parent or guardian present at this event; it is not required for participation.
Write-it Do-it Ticket (Grades 1 - 8)
US$7
In this Science Olympiad event, students will be placed into a more competition-based scene that reflects the rigorous challenge that practical, in-the-moment events can have on critical thinking. Write-it Do-it typically involves two students: a “writer” and a “doer.” At the beginning of the event, the writer will be exposed to a structure built out of some construction materials, and they will have to write out a step-by-step instruction on how to replicate this model exactly. These instructions are not allowed to have any reference of drawings or visuals, with only the literary skills of the students allowing them to push forward. After a certain amount of time has passed, the writer switches with the doer, who then has to follow the written instructions in order to re-create the build, with the students who are the closest to creating the most accurate build being rewarded with a medal in the competition. This event mixes interpretation, engineering, as well as speed in an exhilarating concept that shows how hard it is to do something without the usage of visual reference. Students will take away skills of vocabulary and construction from this event that truly connects them to the Science Olympiad experience. Note - Ticket type only denotes which Science Olympiad Event the student will be attending for the last segment of the event - all other events are open to all students of all grade levels. Helicopter Vehicle Ticket (Grades 1 - 8)
US$7
In this Science Olympiad event, students will be exposed to a version of the helicopter event from a typical competition season; however, they will be given more resources and a deeper lesson on elastic forces. Students will learn how to make a “cup helicopter” through the usage of rubber bands, and they will compete amongst one another to see who can create the most efficient model. This engineering competition will also demonstrate the parallels between the Science Olympiad and at-home models that reflect the wonders of testing and experimentation that students may not get in the classroom experience. Students will be able to work together and take home their helicopters as they bring back experience of competition and trial-and-error in this simulation of elastic force in the real world. Note - Ticket type only denotes which Science Olympiad Event the student will be attending for the last segment of the event - all other events are open to all students of all grade levels. Participation in the event requires a ticket of $5; however, only one particular Science Olympiad worksop may be chosen during the last portion of the event. All elementary school students must have a parent or guardian present at this event in order to participate.
