As the light pushes the horizon there is a different rhythm, inspiration arises, temperatures change, we turn on. There is a clarity at sunrise and sunset that is almost absurd. This August we are celebrating this energy with poetry and experimental music. Ottawa&#39;s Vera Hadzic and PARTYGIRL will each take the stage with this theme in mind. Poet Jody Chan and percussionist Yang will come in from Toronto to share their latest collaboration madness belongs to the people. We&#39;ll open the night with an open mic (2 min time cap), and co-host nina jane will provide a few writing prompts for attendees who wish draw on this energy. Tickets are $20-25, with guests encouraged to pay what they can via the donation option. ABOUT THE PERFORMERSJody Chan is a poet, multidisciplinary artist, care worker, and community organizer based in Toronto. They are the author of three books of poetry: sick (Black Lawrence Press, 2020), impact statement (Brick Books, 2024), and madness belongs to the people (Brick Books, forthcoming September 2026). Yang is a percussionist based in Tkaronto. You can find Yang performing contemporary/experimental and freely improvised music, collaborating across all genres, working on their solo ambient set, and playing drumset with their best friends in the band Tiger Balme. Upcoming releases include madness belongs to the people, a full-length poetry book by Jody Chan with an accompanying album by Yang featuring clanging clackity percussion, imperfect repetition, and looming drones all reaching for the sounds of madness. PARTYGIRL is a bliss-venom of experimental sound, textured vocals, and automatic confession-style songwriting. An evocative and erotic undressing and redressing of the grief trapped inside our bodies. Their first solo show was a sensory-immersive show titled COME BREAK UP WITH PARTYGIRL where, with the use of interconnected wireless headphones, they invited attendees into the body of a break-up. Their latest project <a fr-original-style="" href="https://partygirlrising.bandcamp.com/album/bleach" style="text-decoration-color: currentcolor; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">BLEACH</a> is a multi-disciplinary collaboration inspired by an album of the same name. This project is being released as part of a year-long hiatus from social media. They have performed as part of The NXT LVL Emerging Music Festival and Debaser&rsquo;s Pique. Vera Hadzic is a writer based on the unceded territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation in Ottawa, Ontario. Her first full-length book of poems, Several Small Animals Enclosed in a Benedictine Monastery, was published by Anvil Press in 2025, and was longlisted for the Gerald Lampert Memorial Award. Her poetry chapbook, Fossils You Can Swallow, was published by Proper Tales Press in 2023. She is beginning her PhD in English literature at the University of Toronto. Her poetry and prose have appeared online and in print, and she is a poetry editor for long con magazine.
