Join us for a special screening of the Salish Sea Trilogy, featuring award-winning short films by filmmaker Jessica Plumb that explore the plight of the Southern Resident Killer Whales and the urgent need to protect their ocean home. And help us raise critical funds for our work protecting this incredible region we call home. Film 1: Call of the Orcas explores the urgent effort to recover endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales of the Pacific Northwest, inspired by one of their human champions, researcher Ken Balcomb, who passed away in late 2022. Balcomb’s determined survey work over nearly fifty years helped people see these orcas as individuals, in family groups, and led to a subspecies listing under the US Endangered Species Act. Film 2: Managed to Extinction pairs indigenous visionary Jay Julius with orca scientist Dr. Deborah Giles in the Pacific Northwest, as both work to address the shared extinction threat faced by Southern Resident Killer Whales, and the Chinook salmon they need to survive. It is a sequel to Call of the Orcas, exploring the potential in pairing indigenous knowledge and scientific methods. Film 3: Shared Waters, Shared Crisis, the third film of this trilogy, is set on the Canadian / US border and weaves three community stories, revealing the role of habitat restoration, traditional indigenous fishing practices and marine guardianship in the recovery of iconic species of the Salish Sea. Together these stories explore the interconnected ecosystems of the Fraser River, its estuary and the marine waters of the Salish Sea. Following the screening, Jessica Plumb will join GSA’s Executive Director for a conversation about the growing pressures on the Salish Sea and what they mean for the recovery of the SRWK. Together, they’ll explore how recent legislation and approved infrastructure projects — including the Pacific Link bitumen pipeline and Delta port expansion — could affect the Salish Sea, its sensitive marine ecosystems, and the future of SRKW recovery.
