In this staged reading, the Nanaimo Indian Hospital is re-imagined to be the confluence of the Island&rsquo;s great linguistic diversity embodied by the three young girls&mdash;Dorothy Myth representing Kwak&rsquo;wala, Esther Williams representing Hul&rsquo;q&rsquo;umin&rsquo;um&rsquo;, and Mary Robins representing Nuu-chah-nulth&mdash;whose growing friendship in Ward B consists of delight in language comparisons while sinister medical undercurrents are revealed in the dialogue and action between the medical staff. This applied theatre research project centers on Indigenous language reawakening.<p fr-original-style="width:100%;margin-top:0px;margin-bottom:0px;box-sizing:inherit;" style="width: 100%; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; line-height: 1.5; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Warning: Mature content. Scenes from the Nanaimo Indian Hospital: Reawakening Hul&rsquo;q&rsquo;umin&rsquo;um&rsquo;, Nuu-chah-nulth and Kwak&rsquo;wala Languages&nbsp;a play by Laura Cranmer On behalf of the theatre research family, we are pleased you will be joining us for the staged reading of Dr. Laura Cranmer&rsquo;s play, &ldquo;Scenes from the Nanaimo Indian Hospital: Reawakening Hul&rsquo;q&rsquo;umin&rsquo;um&rsquo;, Nuu-chah-nulth and Kwak&rsquo;wala Languages&quot; on November 23rd at 1pm at the Malaspina Theatre at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo. The play will be performed by actors who are also language learners of each of these First Nations language families of Vancouver Island. The multilingual script is based on Laura&rsquo;s three-year stay at the Nanaimo Indian Hospital as a young child. While federal colonial laws greatly constrained Indigenous bodies and lives by corralling whole populations into federal institutions, such as residential schools and Indian hospitals, these spaces became meeting places for the great diversity of unique languages specific to their traditional territories. There will be a post-performance talk with the playwright, cast and crew. Tickets are free of charge for this event. Cash donations are accepted at the door to fund the event.
