About the Artist: Laurie M Landry is a Deaf Canadian artist whose practice is grounded in visual and embodied systems of communication. Working primarily in large-scale figurative oil painting, she explores how meaning is constructed through gesture, posture, movement, and spatial relationship rather than spoken language alone. In her work, the body functions not simply as subject matter, but as a system of language in itself.
Landry’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including in Canada, France, and South Korea. She has participated in artist residencies and received support from the Canada Council for the Arts and the BC Arts Council. She is based in Vancouver, on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, where she continues to develop a studio practice focused on gesture, embodiment, and contemporary figuration.

Oil Ink on Paper, Ed 3/4, 20" x 20", 2020
FMV. $400
This print explores patterns found in the natural world conveyed through imagery alight with the intersection of line and colour. I am interested in elevating the unnoticed and undervalued, such as the beauty of a dandelion gone to seed or the spiral of a snail’s shell.
I highlighted asymmetry and imperfections to draw a parallel to the human experience. When attention is aligned with the intelligence of the natural world, inner security, peace and contentment can be inspired. My goal through this work is to create the pause, much like a deep breath in order to encourage a subconscious and reflective process to evolve and to blur the boundaries between art and science.
