In March 2026 a significant report about the impact of the criminal justice sector used the phrase &lsquo;hidden sentence&rsquo; about the experience that loved ones have when a family member is in prison. It is because of this hidden sentence that Out There exists. We are available to people across Greater Manchester with a family member in prison, offering practical and emotional suppor:<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Sometimes this looks like being driven to your first prison visit, with the process of getting inside the Visitor Centre explained on the way &ndash; where to go, how to buy refreshments, what to expect &ndash; and a debrief on the way back.&nbsp;</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Sometimes this looks like a support worker visiting you at school for eight weeks, using a sophisticated assessment tool and then planning a programme of 1:1 sessions which address your concerns and focus on your needs.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Sometimes this looks like an occasional phone call because although your son has now been released, you haven&rsquo;t told any of your friends that he&rsquo;s been inside, and don&rsquo;t have anyone else to talk to about how hard it is to support him, since he seems a different person from the one you knew before.</li></ul>Our Charity Grant Funders, for whom we are immensely grateful, currently give us about one third of the money that we need to run the charity for a year. Any help you can give us to contribute towards the other two thirds is hugely appreciated. One-off donations are fantastic; a regular monthly commitment is even better, however small! &ldquo;I&rsquo;ve always felt I had someone in my corner since I found out about Out There.&rdquo; It&#39;s our 20th year in 2026.
