To mark its 50th Anniversary, FOCSA is raising funds to turn an already-built but unusable health post into a source of primary healthcare for children in one of Colombia's most isolated Amazon communities. This Special Appeal will focus primarily on equipping the Puerto Refugio Community Health Post, located in the municipality of Puerto Leguízamo, Putumayo, deep in the Colombian Amazon, with the medical equipment and essential furnishings needed to become fully operational. The project is being delivered in partnership with the Amazon Conservation Team (ACT), the Murui Muina Indigenous authorities and the Level I María Angelines Hospital, combining local leadership with ongoing clinical and technical support to reduce delivery risk and support long-term sustainability. ACT is an international, highly-regarded NGO that has worked alongside Indigenous peoples and local communities in the Amazon for more than 25 years. Approximately 450 Murui Muina children and young people across six remote communities have extremely limited access to basic healthcare. Families often have to travel four hours by river to reach the nearest health facility, while the Community Health Post remains unable to serve patients as it lacks the core equipment and furnishings required for safe clinical care. FOCSA aims to raise £15,000 through the Special Appeal to purchase and deliver the equipment and furnishings needed to make the Community Health Post fully operational; including a WHO-approved vaccine refrigerator and freezer, vital signal monitors, weighing scales, among others. This focused investment will enable routine immunisations, growth monitoring, early diagnosis, basic clinical care and timely referral, bringing essential services within reach of children who currently face long and arduous journeys for basic treatment. By equipping an existing facility and supporting an Indigenous community nurse already in place, the project offers a cost-effective route to immediate and lasting health impact. This project embodies everything FOCSA has worked to achieve over the past fifty years: it is child-focused, community-led, sustainable, cost-effective and high impact. A gift to the 50th Anniversary Special Appeal will create a lasting legacy by helping bring essential healthcare much closer to home for Murui Muina children in the Colombian Amazon. Your generous donation to our Special Appeal 2026 will provide accurate diagnosis and safer treatment for children in Puerto Refugio, Putumayo Amazonas. Every contribution will support essential equipment, better tools for medical teams, and a healthier future for disadvantaged children across Colombia.
