Torfaen Talks CIC has recruited a Mystery Mermaid who&#39;s taking on a challenge&mdash;swimming 440 lengths (6.75 miles) in the month of October 2026 to create ripples of pause, recovery, and hope. They&#39;re doing this to raise vital funds for&nbsp;Torfaen Talks CIC, an essential local counselling service providing low-cost and free talking therapies to those who need them most. Why 440 Lengths? The Reality Behind the ChallengeBetween April 2024 and March 2025, 440 Welsh residents lost their lives to suspected suicide.<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">77% of these deaths were men, with the highest rates seen in males aged 35 to 44.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Behind every single statistic is a person&mdash;a friend, a brother, a father, a child.</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Research shows that a single suicide deeply impacts at least 15 people closely connected to the individual. That means thousands of family members, friends, and colleagues across our communities are left carrying a profound, complex grief.</li></ul> Why Torfaen Talks CIC MattersBereavement by suicide carries a heavy emotional weight, and those left behind are often at a much higher risk of experiencing suicidal thoughts themselves. Accessible mental health support isn&#39;t just helpful&mdash;it&#39;s life-saving. Torfaen Talks CIC provides accessible, local talking therapies that give people a safe space to process their pain. Therapy offers immediate coping strategies in moments of crisis, helping individuals navigate trauma, build resilience, and find a way forward through the dark.
