The challenge involves climbing the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales in under 24 hours: Ben Nevis in Scotland, Scafell Pike in England and Snowdon in Wales. It’s a gruelling challenge that 60% of people fail to complete in 24 hours, and requires strong endurance, careful planning and a fair amount of determination. About the project The Edgbaston Bells Project is raising money to restore the bells at St Bartholomew’s Church, Edgbaston, and make sure they can continue ringing for years to come. The bells were installed nearly 100 years ago in 1927, their fittings are now wearing out and in need of prompt repair to keep them ringing for the next 100 years. The bells are an important part of the local community. They are rung for church services, weddings, funerals and special occasions, helping to mark some of life’s most important moments. They are also used by the Birmingham Universities Society of Change Ringers, a student-run group who have been using the bells for more than 70 years and would otherwise have few nearby alternatives. Without access to the bells at Edgbaston, the society would lose a vital part of its teaching, practice and community life. In the last two years alone, more than twenty students have learned from scratch at Edgbaston, many of whom now ring at churches across the country. This project is about more than repairing old bells. It is about protecting part of Edgbaston’s history, supporting a student community, and helping keep the tradition of bellringing alive for future generations. Preparation We are making sure we get as much training in as possible before 29 August. We have all been putting in some serious time on the cardio machines in the gym, as well as completing longer walks and mountain climbs to test our fitness, pacing and kit before the full challenge. As part of this training, we completed a long walk through the Chiltern Hills, covering 28.6 kilometres with 651 metres of elevation gain in 5 hours and 35 minutes. We also travelled to the Lake District to practise on more demanding terrain that more closely resembles what we will face during the challenge. We completed two hikes, one in the morning and another in the afternoon, to get used to climbing multiple mountains with only a short recovery period between them. Our morning hike began with Scafell Pike, which we summited in 1 hour and 40 minutes. We then continued across the ridge, completing a total of 14 kilometres with approximately 1,100 metres of elevation gain. In the afternoon, we climbed Helvellyn, reaching the summit and descending again in two hours, with a further 710 metres of elevation gain.
