Lower Ure Conservation Trust

Lower Ure Conservation Trust promotes biodiversity and environmental education through conservation efforts and community engagement at Nosterfield Nature Reserve, fostering a deeper connection between people and nature.

Join our August Conservation Club: All about Butterflies 🦋 Spend time at Nosterfield Nature Reserve discovering the butterflies that depend on our carefully managed reserve. Guided by a butterfly survey volunteer, you&rsquo;ll learn to spot different species, explore how they fit into the wider ecosystem, and see how the Lower Ure Conservation Trust cares for their habitats.&nbsp; We&rsquo;ll walk about 1.5 miles around Nosterfield Quarry on mostly flat paths, keeping our eyes open for butterflies along the way. This is a great way to find out more about these fascinating and beautiful insects. You&rsquo;ll also be contributing to important records by monitoring butterfly species and numbers.&nbsp; What you will need: Please wear sturdy footwear and clothing suitable for the weather conditions, including sun-cream and a hat in hot weather and waterproofs if rain is forecast.&nbsp;Bring plenty to drink; biscuits will be provided for the mid-morning break.&nbsp;We will provide all tools and equipment needed.Young people aged 6-14 years will need to be supervised by an adult throughout the session. Butterfly Walk at Nosterfield Quarry

Take a closer look into the fascinating world of moths! Nosterfield Nature Reserve and Nosterfield Quarry offer a mosaic of different habitats that benefit a diversity of moth species including several stunning hawk-moths. As the traps are emptied, you will have the chance to take a closer look at these much underrated insects, many of which are very rarely seen by day. As well as being a great way to get a close up view of these beautiful insects, moth trapping is vital for conservation. Many moths are are our nocturnal pollinators and play an important role in ecosystems. They are indicators of changes in the climate and habitats. Once captured and recorded all the moths are safely released back to the wild. Nature Walk: Plants and insects of Nosterfield Nature Reserve and Camp Wood

A guided tour of Nosterfield Nature Reserve is a great way to find out more about the reserve and its wildlife.&nbsp;Starting at 10am at the Main Reserve Car Park, the morning will be spent exploring the hides and other viewpoints on the Main Reserve, covering around 2.5m of flat, accessible footpaths. In the afternoon, we&rsquo;ll drive the short distance to the Quarry Visitor Centre Car Park for lunch. We&rsquo;ll then walk to the viewpoints around Nosterfield Quarry, including the reedbed hide and the new viewing screen on Kiln Lake. Guided Tour of Nosterfield Nature Reserve and Nosterfield Quarry

Join us for a lino-printing workshop celebrating both World Art Day and World Curlew Day.You will have chance to practise using lino-cutting tools and to generate a design inspired by the wonderful Curlew, before cutting and printing your design. &nbsp;Drinks and biscuits will be available throughout the morning.&nbsp;

For our April conservation club, we&rsquo;ll be taking a closer look at the seeds grown in our Habitat Creation Nursery! In the first part of the session, we&rsquo;ll learn about how our plant nursery team have grown rare wetland plants and we&rsquo;ll have the chance to try some fun practical activities.&nbsp; After a drink and snack, we&rsquo;ll be making sandbag planters. The planters you make will be placed in Flasks Lake to contribute to really important fen habitat! Join us at Nosterfield Nature Reserve for our little explorers group for pre-school children, parents and carers! This month, we&rsquo;re going to take a short walk to the dipping ponds to search for frog spawn, toad spawn and newts, followed by craft activities and stories.&nbsp; Please wear sturdy footwear and clothing appropriate for the weather conditions, including waterproofs and wellies if rain is forecast.&nbsp; These sessions are free of charge, but donations are very welcome.&nbsp; Please be aware that there are no toilet facilities on the main reserve. Explore Nosterfield Quarry, searching for fungi around the woodland paths and glades with expert guides Catherine and Janet. We&rsquo;ll also discuss the role that fungi plays in the ecosystem.
