The Winchelsea And Area Archaeological And Historical Society preserves and promotes the rich archaeological and historical heritage of Winchelsea and its surrounding areas through research, education, and community engagement.

WAAHS have invited Stephen Gray, a retired architect and trustee at Battle Museum, and Jonathan Starkey, author of &#39;The Battle of Hastings at Seddlescombe&#39;, for a lively debate about the site of the Norman landing and the subsequent battle with the English in 1066. The debate will be moderated by a retired High Court Judge. Stephen Gray is a resident of Battle whose family traces its ancient ancestry to Anchetil de Graye, one of the Normans listed on the Abbey&#39;s battle roll.Jonathan Starkey is a retired business executive, formally IT Director and Chief Operating Officer for two of the world&#39;s largest investment banks. The Site of the Norman Landing & Battle

The Winchelsea Conservation Society (WCS) have invited Dr Michael Bintley, Associate Professor of Medieval English Literature at the University of Southampton, to explore what the countryside of England was like in 1066, the year of the Norman Conquest. He will use evidence from literature, material culture and the Bayeux Tapestry to create a picture of that vanished world. Dr Bintley is the author of &#39;Settlements &amp; Strongholds in Early Medieval English Culture&#39;.

What was the English Landscape Like During the Norman Conquest?

We are excited to have the historian Kathleen Tyson MA (Hons) giving a talk on the Bayeux Tapestry itself, using the earliest written source of the Conquest, the Carmen Widonis, to present the story of the Tapestry frame by frame, exploring her conception that the Tapestry was intended to be unrolled for the audience as a bard recounted the story.

The Winchester Conservation Society (WCS) will host a talk by Dr Alexandra Makin, author of a fascinating book on the politics of Saxon embroidery. She will be examining the Bayeux Tapestry in detail. Dr Makin is a Third Century Fellow at Manchester Metropolitan University, as well as a Member of the Scientific Community for Research for the Bayeux Tapestry. She works with the team at the Mus&eacute;e de la Tapisserie de Bayeux on a number of projects.
