The International Changemakers is the pinnacle of student leadership at The Derby High School, and presents students with the opportunity to make a real difference in both their own community and internationally. Now in it's 3rd year you can see the impact from 2025 here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Jvy8D2kMixU The students will visit Khao Lak in Thailand where they take part in four volunteering projects to support a range of communities and develop their own skills of resilience, respect, leadership and empathy. Firstly, the students will prepare and then deliver Science and Sport lessons focused on nutrition and life-long health to Burmese migrant students, with the focus on sustainability. Then the students will work with the Thai Military to carry out a beach clean to support the work with sea turtles in Phang Na before spending a day working at Kaho Lak Elephant Sanctuary to provide food and safety to the rescued elephants. This sanctuary is completely ethical and provides a sustainable approach to supporting the retired working elephants. Finally, the students will learn about, and work to support the regeneration work at Ban Nam Kemh following the devastating tsunami - here they will meet a survivor before working to ensure the local community benefits from tourism, rather than big business. Prior to the visit to Khao Lak in Thailand the team meet weekly to learn about the area, learn some Thai and Burmese language, develop their teamwork, learn first-aid, as well as working on logistics and risk assessments. In addition, they are expected to work as a team to raise the funds for the project. This ensures those involved are not just those with money, but those with the skills and abilities to contribute and develop, irrespective of their socio-economic circumstances. If you feel able to support this project please contribute and ensure we can build a positive world in which our young people value each other and see the benefit of collaboration over separation. Many thanks in advance for your support, Steve Hardicre (Lead Practitioner - Curriculum Enrichment & Team Leader)
