About the artist - Frank Jarvis

Frank was born in North London and attended Enfield grammar school, where he showed a terrific artistic skill. He went on to study at Hornsey College of Art.

His love of natural history, especially birds, bird watching and drawing birds, started at an early age around the reservoirs of North London. When he was in the field Frank always carried a sketch pad (usually “Bushey” brand) in his shoulder bag. He would sometimes stand with it folded back, resting on his arm, and make a lightning sketch and notes on a bird, especially if he was seeing it for the first time. He would then make further notes and sketches when he got home, and then turn these into more detailed studies, often in colour.

His works include his illustrations for the books: 'The Birds of Singapore' and 'The Birds of Bali' and 2 volumes of A Bird Guide to the Field of Experience -

  • Volume 1 - Scotland 1985-86, Norfolk 1986-93
  • Volume 2 - Norfolk and some East Anglian rarities 1993-2001

He was renowned for his ability to  recall what he had seen in fine detail.

With his wife Jane Ironside, they moved to the north-east of Scotland in 1967 and returned to Norfolk in 1986.
