We all avoid. Its human thing. So how come some people think when a person experiences stammering they have to be consistently challenging themselves to reduce avoidance, be courageous and consistently grow/ extend a comfort zone. And what to say when some well-meaning person actually leaves you feeling shamed because you decided to have a day off and simply be you while they are busy encouraging you to stop avoiding and be proud because they believe this is the best thing for you. This workshop invites personal reflection, small group discussion and a couple of ideas on how to use compassion and self-kindness to work out when avoidance is serving you, when avoidance is getting in your way and what to say when other people tell you to stop avoiding. This session will be led by Speech and Language Therapist Trish Chilton. As part of this event we ask that people have their cameras on for the safety of the group. This is part of our series of events for ISAD (International Stammering Awareness Day) 2026 where we celebrate some of the fabulous workshops and sessions from STAMMAFest this summer. Every registration to this event will bring us closer to achieving our mission. Together, we can create a brighter, more compassionate world for people who stammer.
