Work In Progress Workshop for Artists and Filmmakers Join artists Aqsa Arif and Kialy Tihngang for a free work-in-progress workshop exploring film through the lens of 'Fictional Healing'. Bring up to 3 minutes of footage, a pitch deck, or simply an idea you'd like to discuss. In this collaborative session, the group will critique your project using Michelle Williams Gamaker's Fictional Healing methodology—an approach that applies 'critical affection' to explore how melodramatic techniques can become tools for resistance and representation. All experience levels welcome. Free to attend - booking required~Offline are proud to present MERLODRAMA! – a season of film screenings, workshops and discussions dedicated to the enigmatic 1930s film star Merle Oberon – programmed in collaboration with artists Aqsa Arif and Kialy Tihngang, as part of BFI’s Too Much: Melodrama on Screen. This micro-season has been inspired by artist Michelle Williams Gamaker’s forthcoming film Strange Evidence, coming to Glasgow for its Scottish premiere in 2026. This new work of ‘fictional healing’ will uncover Merle Oberon’s story of passing as white to protect her career, through a blend of genre bending body horror and film noir, to explore self-censorship, racial stigma and trauma, while looking at complex decisions shaped by racial prejudice and restrictive conditions of labour – constraints which still impact screen artists today.  The MERLODRAMA! programme invites audiences to delve into the legacy of this extraordinary film star and question the historical forces that compelled her to conceal her mixed Sri Lankan, Indian, and British heritage, to maintain a white identity until her death in 1979. We look at Oberon’s legacy, pairing classic melodrama titles with contemporary artists’ moving image, to curate a weekend of events that take a deep dive into representations of race and resistance on screen under the Hays Code.  Artists’ shorts include work by Maya Gurung-Russell Campbell, Tanoa Sasraku, Sin Wai Kin and Ming Wong. The programme culminates in a Nollywood / Bollywood double bill – the rarely screened 1996 Nollywood horror, Karishika (with 4K restoration by Seek &amp; Find) and the 2002 Bollywood classic Devdas. Keep fuelled through this intensive season finale with a community meal at the Roma Cultural Centre between screenings! We are grateful to our hosts The Deep End and The Roma Cultural Centre.
