Edition 12

Unframed Etching with Aquatint

34.4"x26"x 0.03"

RRP £950

There is little doubt that 20th- and 21st-century British sculpture has been one of the defining forces of contemporary art. Sophie Ryder has been one of the most original forces contributing to this tradition.”

Sir Peter Murray CBE

Founding and Executive Director of Yorkshire Sculpture Park

UK delivery included. Overseas bidders welcome. If you win this item, international postage and packing will be charged separately at cost. We will contact you with a quote after the auction ends. The winning bidder is also responsible for any applicable customs duties, taxes or import charges.

Sophie Ryder's world is one of animals and mystical creatures constructed from wet plaster, old machine parts, scavenged toys, tangled wire and torn scraps of paper. Her hybrid beings are steeped in mythology and cultural symbolism. They are tender and self- aware, resonating on an immediate and human level.

Ryder is renowned for developing the Lady-Hare, a woman with the head of a hare, as a counterpart to the Minotaur of Greek Mythology. Her anthropomorphic characters are used both to explore the human condition and as a metaphor for Ryder's own feelings. Indeed, the Lady Hare's body is based on Ryder's own, imbuing it with a personal significance that transcends the limitations of the autobiographical.

Ryder was the youngest student after JMW Turner to be admitted to the Royal Academy of Arts Schools in London. After completing her studies Ryder was invited to be Artist in Residence at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Since graduating in 1986, Ryder has shown her work all over the world including major outdoor sculpture exhibitions at Yorkshire Sculpture Park; Blickachsen, Germany; RHS Wisley; The Piece Hall; Frederik Meijer Sculpture Park, USA; Djanogly Art Gallery; Pilane, Sweden,; Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens West Palm Beach, The Lightbox and Salibury Cathedral.

UK delivery included. Overseas bidders welcome. If you win this item, international postage and packing will be charged separately at cost. We will contact you with a quote after the auction ends. The winning bidder is also responsible for any applicable customs duties, taxes or import charges.

Whyn Lewis was born in Edinburgh in 1973 and is perhaps best known for her unique and almost obsessive paintings of whippets. She graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1995 and has since had many

solo shows in the UK. She has won several awards including five from the Royal Scottish Academy and currently shows her work with Portal Painters in London.

As well as by subject, Whyn’s paintings tend to be recognisable by the strong and highly detailed forms of animals drawn against plain, layered background colours. She uses the shapes and symbolism of the animals as narrative, sometimes introducing clues in the form of small jewel-like objects hanging from the subjects’ collars. Whyn’s work has been shown in Scotland, England and the USA.

Artist Sally Muir is based in Bath, UK and is a prodigious portrait painter of dogs. Other subjects include human portraits and landscapes, as well as the occasional rodent and bird. For years Muir focused on her knitwear business Muir & Osborne as both a designer and author. With her partner Joanna Osborne, they have published seven knitting pattern books that include Pet Heaven, The Animal Accessory Bible, Best in Show, Knit Your Own Dog, (also Cat, Pet, Zoo, Farm and Dinosaur) and the children’s book Patch’s Grand Dog Show. Since then she has published Old Dogs, Rescue Dogs and coming in 2027 Good Dogs.

Anthropologie, the clothing and décor store has commissioned Muir to create dishes, pillows, wall paper and tea towels. Hermes has commissioned several designs from her. RA Shop has also recently collaborated on a series of products. Her work has recently been used on several book jackets.

"I became fascinated by anatomy and physiology whilst studying sculpture, drawing and painting at the Florence Academy of Art (2013-2016). Since returning to the UK, I have been teaching fine art and working on commissions of varying scales and mediums. My personal work has been simultaneously developed over the past couple of years alongside my teaching and portraiture.

I enjoy playing with light and shadow to describe form, anatomy and atmosphere in a painterly and sometimes abstracted way. Preferring to keep my mark making varied and loose, my work prioritises atmosphere, energy and impression - a congenial divergence from the stillness and detail I like to find in my portraiture.

Horses, dogs and our connection with them is a consistent theme in my work, a fact certainly developed by my own life long relationship with both. Even in the looser pieces, an acute understanding of their anatomy, structure and movement is essential to describing both form and story."

Sarah Gooder is an artist living and working in Yorkshire, UK.   Specialising in painting and drawing dogs, Sarah works primarily in watercolour and ink. She is self-taught, having rediscovered drawing when she studied for an Architecture degree as a mature student. Following her degree Sarah worked in different roles including architecture, garden design and exhibition design.

Process

Working quickly allows a spontaneous, energetic and immediate response to the subject and Sarah works to preserve that initial sketch, those first marks that begin to define the subject.
She also likes to work with multiple, careful layers, that gradually build up tone and texture and really establish a connection with the subject, after many days of observation and painting.

Artist statement

Watercolour allows me to find patterns and textures, layering and blending colours and shapes over eachother. I am also drawn to the line, the natural mark-making that happens as the hand responds to what the eye sees. Dogs hold a huge fascination for me as a subject to paint. I enjoy the patterns of their coats, the landscapes of colour and form. Each dog has a unique character and it feels a privilege when these animals choose to place their trust in us and offer their friendship. This is what I aim to capture in my dog portraits, that connection between two different species and how they convey this to us.
