Their narrative is a poignant mix of grief and resilience. After being uprooted from their homeland, Spanish Jews established new lives around the world, bringing with them a vibrant culture that intricately weaves together Hebrew, Jewish, and Spanish languages and traditions. Today, Ladino is spoken by small communities in over 30 countries, yet it is at risk of fading away.  The Kol Sephardic Choir (ROSE) is the only artistic group in Los Angeles devoted to protecting this extraordinary musical legacy, performing alongside flamenco dancers to highlight the enchanting blend of Hispanic and Jewish cultures. The choir is recognized by the Sephardic authority. The Kol Sephardic Choir (ROSE) is dedicated to the performance, celebration, and preservation of Ladino music and culture. Our mission is to cultivate a profound appreciation for this vibrant heritage, ensuring it thrives for generations to come. Founded in 1992 by the late Raphael Ortasse, a visionary with a deep commitment to preserving the language and songs of his childhood, he believed that true success is measured by the positive impact one leaves on the world, by uplifting others, and by sharing one’s best self. Not only did Raphael envision his dreams, but he also committed himself to transforming them into tangible realities for others. Raphael gave his heart and soul and fully financed all projects for the Kol Sephardic Choir. After mourning the great loss of our founder, the choir decided to establish itself as a non-profit in 2023. Raphael's dynamic energy had a magnetic effect on everyone around him, sparking joy and inspiration with the brilliance of his mind and heart. His passion for good deeds and his unwavering determination to make dreams come true were truly motivating. From a simple sing-along, we grew into the Kol Sephardic Choir (ROSE) family we are proud to be today. With love, we named our ensemble ROSE (Raphael Ortasse Sephardic Ensemble), while also symbolizing the rosette flower that Sephardic Jews used to hide their identity in Spain, opting for it instead of the Star of David in times of persecution. This exquisite rosette was designed by our talented member, Penina Solomon, and has become a beautiful symbol for our group. Raphael's dream has thrived, and today, the Kol Sephardic Choir (ROSE) is a lively ensemble that mirrors the rich cultural tapestry of Los Angeles. Its members come from diverse backgrounds, including Israel, Eastern Europe, Uzbekistan, Libya, Turkey, Spain, and Morocco, with some choristers from Mexico uncovering their Sephardic heritage while delving into their family histories.  The Ladino language, often referred to as Judeo-Spanish, Sephardi, or Judezmo, is a cherished Romance language among Sephardic Jews. The Kol Sephardic Choir (ROSE) actively works to safeguard the Ladino language and its stories through music, working with native speakers, and collecting documented oral traditions in written and recorded formats. This endeavor not only maintains the core of Sephardic music but also connects with the emotions of listeners from every age group, appealing to both younger and older audiences. The Choir not only breathes life into Ladino music through performances but also by commissioning new arrangements of traditional folk songs that have been cherished and passed down through generations, especially during periods when Sephardic Jews were prohibited from celebrating their culture.
