OUR HISTORY IS OUR CAPITAL. HELP US TO RECLAIM SACRED GROUND.
Volunteer days on the lower half of Evergreen Cemetery. 2 to 3 Saturdays a month until October 26.
Your donation will help a lot to achieve our mission. We'll be able to :
- Continue weekly clean-ups
- Ensure that certain plots NEVER become overgrown again
- Provide proper equipment and training (when needed)
- Erect a third entry fence to provide better city access.
- Increase tours and access to lesser known historic plots at Evergreen Cemetery
This project involves volunteer upkeep of several areas of Evergreen Cemetery. We are overjoyed that the city of Richmond has agreed to assume ownership of Evergreen, East End and Forest View Cemeteries. This will provide the proper protocols for volunteers to gain legal access into hard to reach areas. Many areas are not stable enough for heavy equipment. So work must be done by hand. More importantly, proper work needs supervision to ensure that further damage isn't done to fragile stone work and sunken areas.
To that end, we want to continue the basic removal of fallen trees, limbs, brush and seasonal overgrowth over the next few years on the lower sections of Evergreen Cemetery. Between February and November our goal is to host multiple monthly events that target these areas. Our MLK Day of Service removed over 4 tons of brush and debris. To make this a bi weekly project will require the most basic of funding.
Please know that your donation goes to cover fuel, equipment rental, structural procurement, event refreshments and other incidentals.
What is The Ancestral Capital CampaignThe phrase "ancestral capital" refers to the value placed on the lasting and sometimes forgotten work of ancestors and elders. This campaign supports targeted volunteer work, tours, social media and artistic expressions that teach and inspire. There are untapped resources in our collective history that are of immediate benefit. These benefits are spiritual, physical and financial. Ancestral Capital is a collective of individuals seeking to bring those resources to the public to benefit the community at large.
