My name is Nelson Ingram. Some of you reading this may have known me for years. Others may now just be hearing of me. Regardless of our relationship, I hope this finds you happy and healthy. I am writing this to share a story and ask for your support in elevating blood cancer treatment research. At 23 years old, I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on the B-cell. There had been weeks leading up to this diagnosis when I knew something, likely something serious, was affecting me. I had been experiencing moderate fatigue and would quickly run out of breath with minor exertion. An annual check-up with my doctor provided suspicious lab results that showed my red blood cell, white blood cell, and platelet counts were abnormally depleted. My doctor referred me straight to Wake Forest Baptist Cancer Center. There, I received multiple blood and platelet transfusions for several weeks at their outpatient facility. After a poorly timed and executed trip to Boston, I had to return early to Charlotte. I had become severely ill over three days and was fighting to stay conscious while waiting for my mother to pick me up and take me to the Emergency Room. Inside your bones, your blood cells are produced in the bone marrow. Usually, the DNA tells the blood cell to grow at a set rate and die at a set time. A mutation occurred in the DNA of my bone marrow cells, which produce the blood cells. This resulted in my bone marrow producing immature blood cells at an out-of-control rate. These immature blood cells could not function properly and crowded out the healthy cells that were left. It felt like a few more hours without medical care, and my body would have shut down from underneath me from not being able to move oxygen. When I arrived at the hospital, my blood cell and platelet counts were practically nonexistent. I was stabilized and quickly transferred from the Emergency Room to the Cancer Center Inpatient Facility. After two days of testing, I was officially diagnosed with ALL. I was expecting this, but you can never be fully prepared for news of that nature. You try to maintain hope before being diagnosed that your symptoms really are just an iron deficiency or an extra B12 vitamin will make it okay. My oncologist explained that if you had to pick a blood cancer, ALL was not the worst one to have. Advancements in treatments over recent years have dramatically increased survival rates. I was told that if I completed the 3.5 years of treatment without a recurrence, I had an 80% chance of leukemia never coming back. Some blood cancers, like Acute Myeloid Leukemia, have only a 29% survival rate. Over the next thirty days, I was treated with a concoction of chemotherapies, research drugs, and accompanying medicines to remove as many leukemia cells as possible. I’ll spare you some of the gorier details concerning the pokes, prods, and various bodily functions, but it was fairly horrific. My family and friends were amazingly strong for me. They were constantly looking to help me and were always by my side. I even felt an unbelievable outpouring of love directly to me from people whom I would call strangers. That outpouring of love solidified my resilience to maintain an attitude I could be proud of. Of course, no one wants to go through a situation like this, but if it had to happen, I felt as capable as anyone of making it something good. During my initial hospital stay, I had lost over a fifth of my body weight and was barely able to walk. Fortunately, the chemotherapies had done their job, and I was considered in remission. It is very encouraging to hear you are in remission, even if there are over 3 years of constant chemo ahead of you. The following year and a half were spent primarily between my bed, couch, bathroom, and hospital. I was slowly regaining strength as the doses of chemo began to dwindle, and I was able to get back to some of the activities I wanted to do. Some of the more difficult parts were the weekly trips to the outpatient facility and seeing other patients who obviously were not holding up as well as me. There is a bit of guilt in feeling grateful for your situation at the expense of the person next to you. The chemo worked for me, but that is not the case for everyone. There are still plenty of advancements to be made in the treatment of all blood cancers. Many people will have to try different kinds of treatments or do them multiple times and still not be able to win their fight. I write this with 3 months left of my chemo treatments and a very optimistic outlook. My times of daily chemo pills and infusions are coming to an end in April 2025. I find this to be as good a reason as any to have a celebration. Not just a celebration of the end of my chemotherapy but also a celebration of the love poured out from family, friends, acquaintances, and strangers. A love that has made my recovery possible. A love that can be paid forward and shown to others who find themselves in a similar struggle. This is why I request your support in our 2025 Fore The Cure Classic. A golf tournament designed to celebrate those who have survived blood cancers and to help raise money for future research of cancer treatments.
