Focus: In the remote areas of rural Rwanda, Move Up Global is poised to unleash a tide of positive change through our groundbreaking work.  Our mission is to improve access to better health and education in remote and resource-constrained communities. We do that through an innovative framework we call Ipfundo (The Knot).  This approach links health and education systems, which usually work in separated silos, to exponentially multiply the change we create.  We educate people about healthier behaviors and bring them access to resources to achieve change.   At the heart of this transformative approach lies closing the gap on access to clean water, which is a problem for millions of people in the world.  The construction of water wells as a source of sustainable and consistent clean water is not just as a source of hydration but a cornerstone for dismantling structural barriers to health, wellbeing, and academic performance.The Ipfundo Approach:Through Ipfundo, Move Up Global equips local communities with resources and knowledge they can use in tandem to create transformation. Every intervention we offer comes with sustained education so people have time to integrate new resources into their community in their own way, not merely through outside intervention.  We find this framework builds local trust, safeguards individual dignity of the community and largely increases sustainability of change.  Our work in Musanze to date uses local community health workers and school teachers, who have established relationships with the community members, as frontline health workers.  We train them in hygiene and health topics so they can then disseminate the information through the community.  However, as we are teaching about hygiene, handwashing, and clean cooking practices, we find there is very little access in this community to clean, healthy water.  Now that they know about discerning water sources, we aim to help them find better solutions to clean water access.The Crucial Connection:Building a well is not merely about quenching thirst; it's about breaking down barriers that impede progress. Access to clean water is foundational, providing a catalyst for holistic development and addressing overarching challenges in health and education, particularly in rural communities. In the Gataraga Sector of the Musanze District where Move Up Global works, children have to take a treacherous trek every day to get water, which is not even clean. At a minimum, they must travel for 4-5 hours on foot into the forest because that water is still closer than the nearest well. There, they face the dangers of buffalo, elephants, and gorillas and then are not able to attend school. This needs to change. Structural Barriers to be Tackled:<ul><li>Health Disparities: Clean water is the linchpin for improved public health. By eliminating waterborne diseases, we pave the way for communities to thrive and individuals to reach their full potential.</li><li>Academic Performance: A steady supply of clean water directly impacts academic performance. Students, now freed from the burdens of water collection, can focus on their studies and academic achievement. Students who are healthy and not suffering with neglected tropical diseases are ready to learn and grow.</li><li>Intestinal Worms: One of the silent barriers to health and learning, intestinal worms, will see a dramatic decrease with improved water access. Our wells aim to create an environment where children can grow and learn unburdened by preventable health issues.</li></ul> Our Vision:Ipfundo envisions wells not just as water sources but as transformative agents, eroding the barriers that limit health, wellbeing, and academic success. As people have better access to clean water, they will gain improved health and more opportunity to stay in school and position themselves to transform their futures.
