Trinity Lutheran School’s 4th grade classes have adopted local nonprofit Kitchen on the Street this holiday season. This organization is a Christian ministry founded by the Scarpinato family.    On Tuesday 11/29/2022 Kitchen on the Street’s founder, Lisa Scarpinato did a presentation to the class wherein they learned that 1 in 8 AZ children struggles with food insecurity.  Food insecurity contributes to poor mental and physical health as well as decrease academic achievement. 85% of lower income Arizona students do not read at grade level and food insecurity plays a major role in that.  Kitchen on the Street stands with children in need at the intersection of nutrition and academic excellence by partnering with Title 1 schools to provide weekend nutrition to food-insecure children in AZ.  On average, reading skills increase by 12% and math scores improve by 26% once a child receives a Bag of Hope (weekend food backpack). In addition, D performing schools have become B+ performing schools as a result of this program. Students are asked to collect spare change in their KOS Banks and to bring it to the holiday party on 12/22/2022.   Kitchen on the Street is a qualifying charity or the dollar-for-dollar tax credit, allowing individuals to donate up to $400 and married couples to donate up to $800 and receive a dollar-for-dollar credit off their AZ Taxes!
