UPDATE: We recently completed a big preliminary step of our renovations: we removed the old and barely-functional fluorescent lighting in church, painted the ceiling and hung six attractive chandeliers. We also have a pair of deacon's door on their way to us, so when they arrive we'll be ready to start building walls and the iconostasis. This things would beautify our church in order to make it better reflect the Kingdom of God and reveal Christ to us through the Liturgy and your contribution to help us in honor of your departed loved ones would be a meaningful way to remember them and ensure that they are continually prayed for. Why are these things important? The liturgy is how God reveals Himself to us, not just in the life-giving Sacraments of the Church, but in the liturgical services themselves: through the chanting and theological texts which teach us about the saints and the feasts; through the prayers and ritual movements that are prescribed; through iconography, which we often call "windows into Heaven"; and the architecture of the church itself. Christian tradition teaches us that the church itself is holy. As Archbishop Joseph Raya writes in his book The Face of God: <blockquote>The idea of theosis (divinization) is expressed in the architecture of the church itself. In its rich and elaborate decorations it is beautifully sensuous...This typical Byzantine conception looks upon the church building as the earthly heaven, one and the same as that heavenly place where God dwells. Naturally, the manner in which our church is appointed is of utmost importance, and so should be appointed with those things dictated by the prescriptions handed on by our fathers in the faith because they reveal God to us.
