Calling all writers, poets, sculptors, cartoonists, and bohemians -- ALL artists!!  Calling all history buffs!  Calling all women's rights activists!  Calling all naturalists and flower fanatics!  Calling all lovers of the iconic and irresistible Kewpie Doll!!   Beautiful, historically-important Bonniebrook in Walnut Shade, MO, needs your help to survive!!  Rose O'Neill was the first female cartoonist in America, publishing her first comic strip in 1896 and succeeding in becoming the highest-paid female commercial illustrator in the US.  Recently inducted into the Will Eisner Hall of Fame, she was an artist in every sense of the word and was nothing, if not ahead of her time.  Her works transcended the adorable world of Kewpies (she was inducted into the Toy Hall of Fame in 2023) in the form of sculpture, realism, her "Sweet Monster" art, and social commentary.  She stepped outside of some of the most restrictive norms, giving her time and talents to the suffragist movement.  (She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 2019!)  She had homes in the Isle of Capri, New York City, and Connecticut.  Her home in the lush Ozark Mountains, which she named Bonniebrook in 1894, was the place she loved more than all others.  Rose passed away in 1944, and her original home burned in 1947.  It has been meticulously recreated to scale, and we honor her memory and legacy here with that tour home, a fine art gallery, a museum, gardens, the O'Neill family cemetery, and a gift shop.  At this time, it is the 14-room tour home that is most in need of your generosity.  The roof must be replaced and repairs made to the areas that have sustained water damage.  We, the Bonniebrook Historical Society, put our hearts into this labor of love, and if preserving the heritage of this incredible woman stirs your heart, as well, please consider a donation!  No matter the size, we appreciate your contribution more than we can express.  Thank you so much, and please come visit us!! <img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/hxn9dbuhd/image/upload/v1713245682/cv9of4rquvdm2u4b08uu.png" style="width:600px;display:block;vertical-align:top;margin:5px auto;text-align:center;position:relative;max-width:100%;cursor:pointer;padding:0px 1px;user-select:none;box-sizing:inherit" />
