2024 Drought in Zambia

EMERGENCY DONATIONS NEEDED ASAP

Zambia is suffering from an epic drought. Ima Weende (Rise and Walk), our FIOH partner in Zambia has a plan to help five remote communities. About 60 families in total need assistance to survive and recover from this year-long drought. These communities are so far removed that government assistance does not reach them. There was no harvest in March 2024 (their seasons are reversed from ours), and without help, there will be no seeds to plant for this growing season (this month), which means that there will be no harvest in March 2025.

The forecast is for a normal rainy season from Nov. 2024 to March 2025. Ima Weende's plan is to provide an “open pollination” seed and fertilizer for immediate planting, plus a monthly food supplement until harvest, and training in sustainable farming. The beauty of this plan is that each family will be able to harvest in March 2025 enough to feed themselves until the harvest in March 2026, with a small amount to sell, enough for planting in Nov. 2025, and some to give back to Ima Weende. With proceeds from the sale of their share, Ima Weende plans to start a revolving microloan fund for “alternative livelihood opportunities other than crop production.”

The cost of this major project, $27,000, may seem impossible to attain, but it's not if we each do a piece. A donation as small as $35 will feed one person for 6 months! $45 will buy seed and fertilizer for a family! Can you be a HERO?
