Dear Alumni and Friends of Phi Alpha Sigma,

We are reaching out to you outside of our typical fundraising window as the house is facing a dire situation that requires urgent attention.

There has been a leak stemming from the roof traveling through the center of the house for the past 40 to 50 years. Previous attempts to repair this have been unsuccessful. Over the last month, the current members of the house have noticed significant shifting in the floors and ceiling in this surrounding area. Further investigation has revealed that every joist in that column of the house has been completely destroyed by water damage. I attached some photos below to show the extent of the damage. The house is actively sinking and our laundry room and 1st floor bathroom are in danger of collapsing at any moment. For our own safety, the members of the house currently living in rooms affected by this situation have been forced to move elsewhere until we can address this issue.

After working with multiple contractors, we have found someone with the experience necessary to take on this large project. We have been quoted at $100,000 for the entire project, which includes an engineering plan and a total repair of the central column of our house. This starts with supporting the foundation, jacking the house up to its original level position, and redoing 3 bathrooms and multiple bedrooms. The generosity of our alumni has allowed us to put down a deposit so that we can start this project immediately, however we will still be well short of covering the entire project, despite recent rent increases and the recent formation of our 501c3 organization, to which the current members make yearly contributions to in order to help create a sustainable savings account for situations like this.

For over 80 years, this house has provided affordable housing, lifelong friendship, and career guiding mentorship for hundreds of medical students.  I want to reiterate that the house is currently at risk of being deemed unlivable without these repairs. We hope this fundraising page will be an effective way to reach our alumni and anyone who has been affected by our house as your generosity is the only thing that can ensure Phi Alpha Sigma can stay standing.

Please share this page with any other friends and alumni of Phi Alpha who you think would want to help save Phi Alpha Sigma.

P.S. For those who are not aware, in 2021 we created the Friends of Phi Alpha Sigma 501c3 organization to help be the primary financial support for our house to ensure we can continue to provide affordable housing for medical students. Any donations made to this page can be used as a tax deduction. Further, this website allows us to keep 100% of your contributions.

Image 1: This is the corner of the mezzanine level, above where most of the water damage has occurred. This area has sunk in significantly and has a severe slope to it.

Image 2: Image of the second floor bathroom. The concrete floor has cracked as the support below it has sunk in. The brick is still stable, however the surrounding wood joists are rotted.

Image 2: This is a photograph from right underneath the laundry room. Multiple joists are split, wood is rotting, and the entire area is covered in mold.

Image 3: This is the same area underneath the laundry room. This reveals a better image of the rotting and split joist as indicated by the arrows.

Image 4: This image shows the bedroom which was added on as an addition 30+ years ago. The joists, circled in white, are rotated on their axis and should be flush with the perpendicular supporting beam which has sunk due to the damage below it.

Image 5: This is the ceiling of the mezzanine area of the house with a bedroom above it. The joist circled in white has split and is falling through, with the surrounding joists are also dry rotted, moldy and in danger of falling.
