Why support Overfield? The Image of the Child is one of the fundamental tenets of the Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education. This four-word phrase is the foundational precept describing how we view children, and it informs all of the choices we make as educators. Our Image of the Child is defined as the belief that children are strong, capable, full of potential, and deserving of a voice in their own learning. This is why we are continuously curious about questions like... How can we support children in being both cared for and autonomous? How can we encourage children to work through disappointment and to overcome obstacles and setbacks by engaging and expanding their innate competencies? How can we promote the consideration and representation of children’s theories and encourage them to be creative, critical thinkers? The importance of giving children a voice in their own learning can not be overemphasized, as it helps them to recognize their significance and value as citizens of their classroom, school, family and community. Children’s agency leads to improved self-esteem and confidence, and it prepares children to solve problems, make responsible decisions and become self assured leaders. It also makes them empowered learners for life! As an independent school, we are fortunate to have the freedom to embrace this unique curriculum, one that we believe best supports young learners and their development. However, operating an independent school also requires us to rely on tuition, grants and other contributions from friends like you. And so, we ask today for your financial support. It is imperative as we endeavor to offer a school experience where everything begins and ends with a strong Image of the Child.
