Hi, I'm Megan, the founder, owner, and operator of Pigeons for Miles Sanctuary and Rescue; the first of its kind sanctuary located in New York state, focused on the care of pigeons and other unreleasable birds who have special needs and disabilities.   I started rescuing pigeons in 2022, but my history with animals and birds spans my entire life. After high school, I attended veterinary school, but suffered an accident which left me permanently disabled, and unable to complete my degree. I continued to help animals on a smaller scale, such as foster and TNR, while undergoing physical therapy and further surgeries.   Because of becoming permanently disabled at such a young age, and without a family support system, I have always struggled with housing instability, and just financially in general. Despite this, I never stopped helping animals in the ways I was able to, such as volunteering.     In January 2020, I finally came back to New York with the intent of starting my own animal rescue. Unfortunately, just a few weeks later, the world essentially shut down, and we collectively experienced the start of the pandemic, and life as we now know it.     In 2023, I was finally able to relocate to an area where I could focus solely on the animals and my efforts to start a rescue. I currently reside in Putnam County, near the absolutely beautiful Adirondack mountains. However, the property we call our current sanctuary location is rented, which is unsustainable, unpredictable, and counterintuitive to the rescues overall mission.  By supporting this campaign with your tax deductible donation, you will be helping Pigeons for Miles Sanctuary and Rescue obtain a permanent location within Putnam County where we can build accessible and special-needs centered aviaries. At this time, we are operating at capacity, and cannot accommodate new intakes until we have a permanent location to call home.    We know this is a lofty goal, but funding this project will not only help us to continue doing this incredibly necessary, lifesaving work, it will also allow us to pursue the initiative to help the feral flocks of New York City as well. In the future, we plan to advocate for a contraceptive loft program to be implemented in and around NYC's parks, to provide a way for pigeons and people to coexist peacefully.     Our mission is one shaped by passion, personal experience, and a lot of hardship. Pigeons for Miles Sanctuary and Rescue was born out of the necessity for racing and other displaced pigeons to have a safe place to call home after being abandoned or injured. To continue forward, we need your help to secure a permanent sanctuary location. The funds raised by this campaign will be used for a down payment to secure a forever home.     We will be updating this space intermittently with more information related to this fundraiser, as well as progress updates. I started Pigeons for Miles because found a lost racing pigeon, now named Miles, and promised him would do everything could for him, not realizing at the time that would become his forever home. Initially, I tried to place Miles in a sanctuary, only to visit and realize that it was an out of control hoarding situation. They didn't even know how many pigeons they had, and it was incredibly sad to see the living conditions they suffered in. Deciding to finally become a nonprofit was to ensure I was doing everything possible to access all resources to be able to continue, not only to keep giving Miles everything I've promised him, but to help as many pigeons and other animals as I possibly can. Since we are still brand new as a nonprofit, we don't yet qualify for many of the grants or other financial support others have access to. Most grant programs want to see your first 3 years of filings before considering you as a potential recipient. We do hope to utilize grants in the future to expand our operations and staff, once we are able to obtain a permanent location. Some of our other future goals include;  — Constructing multiple aviaries, each built and outfitted to the special needs of it's residents — A soft release aviary to help establish a safe place for feral pigeons to recover before potential release— Other aviaries for wild birds who are receiving treatment and care under the NYS DEC rehabber license held by head caretaker Megan— A flight aviary outfitted for the care and rehabilitation of unreleasable raptors and other birds of prey— Introducing locally or city run dovecotes or rooftop lofts in and around most of the major NYC parks, with the goal of ethical population control via egg removal/replacement, as well as to provide medical attention and proper food— To advocate for a total ban on pigeon racing by first implementing a ban on the sale of all birds in stores in New York City and State With these short and long-term goals in mind, we truly hope you will understand that our passion for helping animals in need simply could not wait until everything was "perfect". As difficult and uncertain as our present and future are right now, we know that with your support, we can absolutely make this dream a reality. We CAN save as many pigeons as you'll help us to.
