THE PROJECT: What Ecole Claire Fontaine faculty and its founder, Joëlle Dumas, began 5 years ago as "Pen Pal" letters between <a href="https://youtu.be/BFKIYLZ1zl8" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color:initial;user-select:auto;box-sizing:inherit;color:inherit" target="_blank">preschoolers in Venice Beach, CA and preschoolers in a remote Cameroon village</a> has morphed into: GRIOTS KUJITEGEMEA (Independent Storytellers) Introducing a self-funding, multimedia, online platform for youth aged 5 to 15 to write and illustrate (both digitally and/or freehand) short stories, plays and poems to be sold in digital and/or hard backed book form (2-stories per book). The youth will be compensated half of the proceeds raised from the book sales from each of their independent stories and illustrations.   The other half of the proceeds go towards printing, promotion, handling, website maintenance, and the continued provision of resources to schools in underserved areas of the world...there will be NO "Paid Staff" or "Artistic Director”. The writing and performing arts will be used in conjunction with long-term mentoring to provide youth with tools for self-expression and increased academic performance. This will also provide young people the skills to think creatively, critically, and courageously about life goals and choices.   This Project is not about teaching children to act, although they will learn to. It is not about teaching them to write plays or scripts for television or film, although they will learn that as well. What it is about is giving young people an opportunity to prove that they have something of value to offer, something that comes from within that they alone possess, something that cannot be taken away.
