Miwok Archeological Preserve of Marin (MAPOM) is a volunteer based, non-profit organization. It was founded in 1970 as the result of community involvement in the study of Coast Miwok culture in Marin County. Our mission is to help identify, preserve and protect the cultural and physical resources of the Coast Miwok, indigenous peoples of Marin and southern Sonoma Counties. We seek to provide the public with accurate information about this tribe's rich history and current events. Some of our activities:
- Help identify, preserve and protect the cultural and physical resources
of the Coast Miwok, indigenous peoples of Marin and southern
Sonoma Counties.
We seek to provide the public with accurate information about this
tribe's rich history and current events.
- Promote awareness and understanding of the cultural, political
and social issues facing the Coast Miwok today.
- Disseminate accurate information about Coast Miwok culture
past and present.
- Support the Coast Miwok in their tribal restoration, such as genealogy
research.
- Encourage preservation of old village, manufacturing and gathering
sites. If destruction is unavoidable, we promote careful scientific
excavation, with ongoing consultation with descendants of local
Coast Miwok.
- Publish a newsletter The Acorn with articles of interest.
