She was a 23 year old Biochemistry student.  What is the Fellowship about?Although scientists are not deeply appreciated in Africa, Tatenda was convinced that science could deliver solutions for economic and pressing societal problems. However, most students cannot afford their studies. Therefore, this memory of Tatenda should be awarded to an outstanding female biochemistry student who is currently enrolled in the same program and as Tatenda was in – continuing her legacy. The support would cover:<ul><li style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:Helvetica;box-sizing:inherit">the tuition fees</li><li style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:Helvetica;box-sizing:inherit">housing</li><li style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:Helvetica;box-sizing:inherit">crucial chemicals for their final project</li><li style="color:rgb(0, 0, 0);font-family:Helvetica;box-sizing:inherit">support the attendance at an international conference in biochemistry</li></ul>Given that most students in Africa need to work part-time to fund their chemicals and labware, this will enable the recipient to continue what Tatenda was fighting for. Who was Tatenda?Tatenda’s dream was to help her struggling peers and her society through demonstrating what science has to offer. In her own research, she focused on treatments for common pathogen driven skin diseases in her country. From our own experience, we can say she was a lovely, energetic and enthusiastic person who would take literally any chance to support other young people. To get an impression, here are a few initiatives she participated in:<ul><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Host of the #ForwardSTEMSpace on Twitter that promotes public conversations around bridging science advocacy, science policy and creativity in Africa</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Volunteer administrator for Visibility STEM Africa </li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Member of the National Association of Science Writers</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Science Communications Affiliate of the Zimbabwe Young Academy of Sciences</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Member of the IUBMB’s Trainee Initiative supporting early career researchers worldwide</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Advocating her vision at the World Economic Forum</li></ul>Now, all those initiatives lack a crucial contributor. Why do we need your help?Last year we put our idea into action and provided the seed-funding for the scholarship and started to organize its realization in Africa.  We collected a large amount already, but we are not quite there yet – so close to the potential start date. We need to have the scholarship in place before May 1, 2024, otherwise the entire initiative will fail.
