I can now see much more clearly the transformative power of newly affordable technologies to create opportunity in classrooms with up to 100 students and a single, overwhelmed teacher. We are installing &nbsp;solar-powered, Internet-enabled computer labs, providing personalized AI-powered tutoring, beginning with 4 middle schools. For the first time ever, reliable high bandwidth Internet access is broadly available in the most remote region of Senegal--both through 5G and Starlink--and it&#39;s affordable. Combined with solar power and inexpensive refurbished laptops, students in these schools will have powerful tools for learning at low cost. &nbsp; To ensure the over 1,700 students in these schools advance to high school, we are building upon the foundation of computer and Internet access to provide teachers with AI-powered digital assistants and to give every student a personalized AI tutor, capable of 24-7 support in French and in local languages. Research has proven that 1-on-1 tutoring is far more effective than traditional classroom instruction. This is the first time in history that personal tutoring has become possible for students who aren&#39;t from the wealthy elite. But spending time with these students and teachers made one thing clear: technology infrastructure alone isn&#39;t enough. While half of middle school students in the region are female, only about 16% of girls advance to high school. And those that don&#39;t make it to high school are several times more likely to end up married young and bearing their own children before turning 18. &nbsp;So, we are also helping to address critical water and sanitation needs in these schools. None of them have functional toilets or consistently running water. Most middle school girls also lack female hygiene supplies, which is a key barrier to consistent attendance.&nbsp; We started the&nbsp;<a fr-original-style="" href="http://Kédougou.org" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color: initial; -webkit-user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">Kedougou&nbsp;</a><a fr-original-style="" href="http://Kédougou.org" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color: initial; -webkit-user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">Institute</a> to focus on the educational, environmental, and public health challenges facing the most impoverished and isolated region of S&eacute;n&eacute;gal.
