A woman wearing a mask stands in front of a closed metal shutter on a red brick building adorned with political banners.

They Built It for Us. Now It's Our Turn to Preserve It. Preserving Our History. Restoring Our Home. Securing Our Future.More than 50 years ago, a generation of community leaders in Southeast Queens made an extraordinary decision. They decided that their community deserved more than a temporary place to gather. They believed it deserved a permanent home. A place where neighbors could organize, where community leaders could emerge, where important conversations could take place, and where the next generation could learn the power of civic participation. With determination, sacrifice, and a vision for the future, they purchased a former post office at 197-01 Linden Boulevard and established a permanent home for the Guy R. Brewer United Democratic Club. What they created was more than a political headquarters. They created a legacy of community ownership. For generations, the Guy R. Brewer United Democratic Club has represented a tradition of grassroots leadership, civic participation, and community advocacy in Southeast Queens. Its history is rooted in the belief that ordinary people, working together, can accomplish extraordinary things. The late Councilman Archie "The Dean" Spigner understood the importance of that legacy. As he would remind us, this building belongs to all of us.Those words carry a responsibility that extends beyond any one administration, club president, district leader, or generation. We did not inherit this building simply to occupy it. We inherited a responsibility to preserve it. Today, That Legacy Needs Our Help. Our nearly century-old building has reached a critical point.Years of aging and deterioration have created renovation needs that extend beyond what our club can reasonably afford through its regular operating resources. We need a new roof, restored flooring, renovated bathrooms, improved lighting, replacement windows, fresh paint, updated seating, and other essential improvements. These are not simply cosmetic upgrades. They are investments in the safety, accessibility, functionality, and future of a community institution. Our goal is to restore this historic headquarters so it can continue serving as a place for civic education, neighborhood discussions, community organizing, leadership development, and public engagement. The Next Chapter of Our Legacy Begins With Us.Imagine what our predecessors would think if they could see the institution they worked so hard to establish. They purchased this building because they believed in the future of Southeast Queens. Now, more than half a century later, we have an opportunity to honor their sacrifice by investing in that same future. The Building Legacy Fund is our commitment to restoring and preserving this historic community asset. It is an invitation to everyone who believes that local institutions, community ownership, and civic participation deserve to endure. Whether you have been part of this club for decades or are learning about its history for the first time, you can help write its next chapter. We invite individuals, families, community partners, local businesses, and those whose lives have been touched by Southeast Queens to participate in this historic restoration effort. Some generations build institutions. Others are entrusted with preserving them. This is our moment. Make a contribution to the Building Legacy Fund and help preserve the home our predecessors built for generations yet to come.Guy R.
